POSITION SUMMARY
The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for recruiting, managing, and coordinating various individual volunteers and special groups supporting Comfort Life Hospice’s mission, vision and values. Responsible for actively engaging corporate volunteer programs and acting as spokesperson in community engagement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In addition to all components of the above position summary the following “Essential Duties and Responsibilities” are essential to successful performance in this position
- Promoting, recruiting, screening, and training new volunteers for the agency.
- Collecting volunteer information, availability, and skills, and maintaining an up-to-date database.
- Using marketing tools such as outreach programs, e-mails, and volunteer databases.
- Keeping new and existing volunteers informed about the organization and volunteer opportunities.
- Coordinating service project requests from boy scouts, girl scouts and other special community groups.
- Actively engaging with corporate employee volunteer programs.
- Working closely with program/clinical staff to identify volunteer opportunities, ensure strong communication between programs and volunteers and coordination of activities.
- Recruiting and supervising volunteers for special events.
- Coordinating agency holiday toy drive and helping supervise volunteers during holiday toy drives and other seasonal activities.
- Leading regular support meetings for and stewardship of volunteers.
- Representing Comfort Life Hospice in the community at agency and volunteer fairs
- Acting as a spokesperson for the agency and developing community and corporate connections.
- Maintaining accurate volunteer records in agency database.
- Identifying leadership among volunteers and cultivating volunteer leaders.
- Accepts and performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- The incumbent in this position provides leadership and direction to volunteers.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CREDENTIALS
- At least 18 years of age.
- Required Health Screening, TB Clearance, and Criminal Record Clearance.
- Special skills needed to meet client needs [California Code of Regulations Sections: 85065(f)/87411(g)]
- Two years paid or unpaid experience in a volunteer program.
- One year supervisory experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

- A working knowledge of communications and marketing practices in nonprofits.
- Demonstrated skills in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the media, especially those in the entertainment industry.
- Very effective oral and written communication skills including ability to be persuasive; superior writing skills including editing for content, format, style, and grammar; public speaking experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of print production practices.
- A working knowledge of volunteer recruitment and retention practices in nonprofits, preferably including experience in an organization providing direct human/social services.
- Demonstrated organizational skills to manage two primary and different functions.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with members of the board of directors, volunteers, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills to lead several hundred volunteers.
- Ability to be flexible and work in a changing environment.
- Must have a valid California Driver License, proof of automobile insurance, and meet the Agency’s safe driver guidelines.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Superior computer skills, specifically utilizing Microsoft Office programs, and other programs and social media tools, such as Constant Contact, Facebook, and Twitter, also preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
In the course of performing this work, the incumbent:
- Will spend substantial time standing, sitting, speaking, and listening.
- Will be required to travel via personal vehicle or public transportation to patient personal residences, facilities, or community locations as needed.
- May lift up to 25 lbs. periodically.
