The Product Development Engineer is responsible for supporting new business opportunities and leading technical efforts associated with product design, manufacturability, and cost estimating. This individual contributor role is both internally collaborative and externally customer-facing, providing engineering support for new applications, part concepts, and feasibility evaluations. The engineer works closely with customers, sales, tooling, operations, and external suppliers to deliver optimized designs and accurate cost estimates that align with MPP's capabilities and objectives.
Position will be located at one of our plants: Rockwood, TN - Falls Creek, PA - St. Marys, PA - Punxsutawney, PA - Campbellsburg, IN
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage directly with customers and sales to understand application requirements and develop product solutions.
- Lead product design activities focused on form, fit, function, and manufacturability.
- Support the cost estimating process by identifying internal process steps, tooling requirements, and working with external vendors for secondary operations or outside services.
- Develop and maintain models and technical data packages using CAD software.
- Conduct DFM (Design for Manufacturability) reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process by contributing to feasibility reviews, process development planning, and documentation.
- Support APQP activities, including FMEA reviews, control plan inputs, and PPAP readiness.
- Prepare engineering documentation including drawings, part specifications, and cost estimate summaries.
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of engineering input to support quoting and program management milestones.
- Maintain compliance with customer standards, internal procedures, and industry best practices.
- All other duties and tasks assigned by manager
Competencies
- Strong mechanical design skills and familiarity with powdered metal applications
- Proficiency in CAD modeling and drafting tools (SolidWorks or equivalent)
- Strong analytical skills and familiarity with cost estimation methodologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external vendors
- Familiarity with FMEA, FEA, and APQP tools and methodologies
- Customer-focused mindset with professional presentation skills
- Organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple priorities

EDUCATION, Experience and TRAINING
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field required
- 2+ years of experience in a product development or manufacturing engineering environment preferred
- Experience in customer-facing engineering roles is a plus
- Exposure to powdered metal components or similar processes preferred
- Ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks on multiple projects with multiple people
Working Environment and Conditions
- The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- This position requires working in an internal environment.
