About the Department

Creates, installs, collects, and maintains data for traffic, warning, parking, school, informational, and recreational guide and street signs for the county.

Position Duties

• Assists with prioritizing work assignments and determining work procedures. • Collects field data on signs with handheld GPS units and logs information into an electronic sign database. • Assists in coordinating with contractors and other professional representatives to identify new areas for sign placement. • Performs design and layout. • Operates hand-held, electrical, or gas powered tools and equipment in installing signs. • Maintains inventory of materials, supplies and equipment. • Repairs signs and barricades and salvages useable materials from signs and related traffic devices. • Performs fieldwork with road crews (i.e., pavement marking, sign installation). • Assembles, installs and replaces regulatory warning, stop and street signs. • Operates forklifts and front-end loaders loading, storage and maintenance of materials and supply inventories, maintenance of sign production equipment, receipt and posting of department supplies. • Paints roadways and markings for schools, crossings and parking lots; removes nuisance items from traffic areas and clears brush and debris from signs and traffic devices. • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience: Requires a high school diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of six (6) months experience in performing tasks that demonstrate skill in the use of various hand-held and gas-powered tools and equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be available for response to declared emergencies outside of normal duty hours. Experience with Windows Operating systems is required. Experience with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid driver license. Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Maintenance of Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level 1 certification within one (1) year of hire.

Other Qualifications

Physical Requirements: Must be able to operate a variety of hand-held, electrical, and/or gas-powered equipment and tools, to include light duty equipment. Requires the ability to operate modern office equipment to include computers, and copiers/printers. Must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Position includes considerable bending, stooping and walking over rough and uneven surfaces. Must be able to perform manual labor and remain on feet for extended periods of time with exposure to outside atmospheric conditions. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work Language Ability: Requires the ability to communicate effectively in English, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information; requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to read and comprehend established traffic and signage regulatory information concerning development and placement of signs and roadway markings. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving concrete variables in or from situations where limited standardization may exist; to perform manual labor and machine operations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to occupation. Numerical Aptitude: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline. Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
