Job Description:

Summary:

The Translating Research into Action Center (TRAC) at American University TRAC is strengthening the university’s institutional capacity to support research translation for societal and economic impact through research, training, and support - financial and operational, for faculty and students. The goal is to make academic research not just a theoretical pursuit but a catalyst for positive, tangible growth in society. TRAC is seeking a Communications and Program Assistant who will be responsible for supporting communications and, as needed, project coordination under the supervision of the Program Director. The office is looking for an effective communicator to help implement website updates, layout newsletters and email announcements, and create social media engagement plans and posts.

Interpersonal and strong written communication will be a key part of this role and experience with both is highly desired. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate initiative, creativity, and problem solving through their past experiences and/or coursework.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement website updates using Papterthin (AU’s CMS) in collaboration with TRAC staff.

  • Manage TRAC’s LinkedIn account including creating engagement plans and implementing weekly postings of events, programming, and other opportunities.

  • Assist TRAC staff with compilation and layout of quarterly e-newsletter for faculty and external stakeholders via Emma.

  • As needed, assist with event coordination and planning, including helping with RSVPs and printing materials.

  • Attend TRAC related events on campus to support day-of event coordination, as needed, including but not limited to attendee check-in, room set up and breakdown, and Zoom support for virtual/hybrid events.

  • Attend weekly planning/check-in meetings with the TRAC staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-Time.

  • 20 Hours Per Week.

  • Hybrid (with at least 1-2 days in-person per month).

  • As the class schedule permits, the Communications and Program Assistant will be expected to attend TRAC events to assist with day-of coordination as well as weekly team meetings. 

  • This position is for the Fall semester with a strong possibility of renewing for future semesters.

Salary Range:

  • $17.95 - $18.50 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Proficiency in social media account management (particularly LinkedIn) and strong background with proficiency using a website content management system.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and convey complex ideas clearly.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • High level of creativity and initiative, with the ability to implement projects independently.

  • Exhibit a high level of reliability and professionalism with demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Self-starter and collaborative team player, able to prioritize and meet deadlines as delineated by the Program Director.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student currently pursuing a degree in communications, graphic design, public relations, marketing, or a related field is preferred.

  • Knowledge and/or experience with email marketing systems like Emma is preferred.

  • Experience and/or interest in research and research translation is preferred.

  • Experience with event planning and execution for faculty facing programs is helpful.
