About the Department



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain strong working knowledge of state code, local code and department policies regarding filing, assessment, billing, appeals and exonerations of local tax assessments. Stay abreast of new technology and best practices to increase efficiency and reduce unnecessary paperwork and/or manual labor;
  • Serve as primary contact with the public on designated areas of local taxation. Interaction may be in person, by telephone or written communication. Must be able to handle a diverse and unpredictable range of questions and emotions in a professional, courteous manner;
  • Aid customers in one-stop shopping as much as possible, advising of filing and payment requirements in other city departments, other local jurisdictions, and the Commonwealth. Understand the distinction between public and confidential information;
  • In working with taxpayers, review entire account and take appropriate action upon finding an inaccuracy, missing assessment or an anomaly in filing. Maintain awareness of other assessments for which the taxpayer may be liable, whether filed or not. Advise taxpayers of any exemptions or local tax' incentives for which they may qualify;
  • Assist Commissioner in developing analytical tools and regularly reviewing various audit reports to identify areas of missing or inaccurate assessment, delinquent accounts, and anomalies in filings or payments;
  • Assist in the gathering of information and materials for meetings, statistical analysis, and reporting at state and local levels;
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate's Degree in related financial field. Supplemental courses in tax preparation, bookkeeping, accounting and/or related work experience are preferred. 
  • Must enroll and actively participate in Weldon Cooper certification as Master Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue; maintaining certification once earned. 
  • Valid driver's license
