As the face of the museum, the shop is among the Front of House departments facilitating a meaningful, positive relationship among art, ideas, and people with the goal of exceeding visitor expectations. Visitors to the shop are met by staff who are personable, knowledgeable, and hospitable. Retail Associates report to the Head of Retail Operations and are regularly under the guidance of the Retail Shift Lead. 

Core responsibilities

• Warmly welcome everyone to the shop, being attentive to customers as first priority and building relationships with repeat customers

• Actively sell shop merchandise by being efficient, knowledgeable, and fluent in products, artist bios, and merchandise lines carried as     well as museum collections and exhibitions

• Maintain all shop areas including visitor-facing and behind-the-scenes storage, ensuring all are kept well-stocked, neatly           merchandised, and clean (dusted, wiped, etc.)

• Uphold merchandising standards to maximize sales, regularly folding and straightening throughout shifts

• Process inventory including counting items and tagging merchandise; participate in regular inventory counts

• Be thoroughly knowledgeable about the membership program at the Buffalo AKG, actively selling memberships at all levels

• Ensure that appropriate actions are taken to resolve customer concerns and questions expediently

• Assume responsibility for sales and return transactions during shift from opening initial cash drawer to closing deposit preparation,

 adhering to processes for accurate cash handling and accounting procedures

• Operate software in Mac iOS and Windows including but not limited to Blackbaud Altru and Microsoft Office Suite; hardware such as      tablets, laptops, receipt printers, credit card readers, telephone, radio, speakers, Wi-Fi hot spots, and more

• Demonstrate a high degree of initiative, responsibility, punctuality, and accountability

• Maintain a neat, professional appearance in dress and in manner

• Participate actively in team meetings, trainings, and outings

• Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, skills, & abilities

Education and Experience

• Experience in retail sales with personalized service

• Familiarity with use of software and/or hardware related to this position

• Knowledge and application of best practices in IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility)

• Interest in museums, modern and contemporary art; able to communicate the institution’s history and activities

• Able to accurately complete transactions and balance a cash drawer

• Motivated, reliable, responsible, and professional

• Adaptable and quick learner: able to learn new content, processes, and technology including various software and hardware

  (troubleshooting when necessary)

• Keen attention to detail

• Able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled in advance during hours of operation (10 am – 5 pm Sunday, Monday, Thursday; 10 am – 8 pm Friday; 10 am – 6 pm Saturday)

Additional physical requirements, with or without accommodations:

• Able to use computer keyboard, mouse, screen, telephone, and various other equipment including reading screens, barcodes, and       labels

• Able to stand or walk for long periods of time, bend, stoop, squat, reach, and climb a stepstool or ladder

• Able to grasp and hold items of different weights and sizes, able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds

• Able to communicate with customers and colleagues clearly and effectively

Salary

$19.31 per hour plus membership sales commissions
