Merchant McIntyre & Associates is a midsize federal grants and government relations firm headquartered in Washington, D.C., that helps nonprofit clients from the higher education, healthcare, and local government sectors reach their federal funding and legislative advocacy goals.
Merchant McIntyre is seeking an Accounting and Operations Associate. Supporting our leadership team, this role will report to our Director of Human Resources and will facilitate MM’s accounting and office operations.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, payroll, credit card transactions, monthly reconciliation, and QuickBooks.
- Oversee office operations, including office supply management, coordinating maintenance needs, supporting team events, employee onboarding/offboarding, and collaborating with leadership on planning and executing MM’s future office relocation.
- Support HR with payroll processing and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations.
- Support the Client Service team in clients' onboarding and communication with clients on invoicing, contracts, or identifying payment matters.
- May support in-house counsel in client contract development and renewal processes.
- Support our third-party strategic financial advisor in the completion of audits or reviews, as needed. May contribute to financial reports, including monthly and quarterly statements, forecasts, and other analyses.
- Support leadership with the ongoing development of the firm’s capacity-building services sister agency.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
- Proficiency in GAAP-compliant practices.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of full-time accounting or bookkeeping experience, internship experience will also be considered.
- Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks and Excel is required, and experience with payroll management (e.g., Paylocity) is preferred.
- Previous experience with benefit administration, expense management tools (e.g. Expensify) and/or CRM software (e.g. Salesforce) is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently and with discretion.
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Full-time, salaried position based in Washington, D.C., with opportunity for travel.

- Compensation range: $55,000-$75,000, commensurate with experience
This is a hybrid role in Washington, DC, and requires in-office attendance Tuesday-Thursday. Remote candidates will not be considered.
