General Purpose
Under the supervision of the Events Assistant Manager, Events Set Up plays a dynamic role in the Events department by performing a wide variety of duties which strive to achieve Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s (FCZ) strategic goals. Events Set Up provides exceptional customer service and is responsible for the set-up and breakdown duties of Zoo events they are assigned to. This position also assists with a variety of guests service activities throughout each event, which aligns with the mission and vision of Fresno Chaffee Zoo. This is a seasonal position lasting from September 2025 to January 2026.
We are pleased to offer this part-time position an Employee Assistance Program, 401K, Paid CA Sick Time earned on an accrued basis. The pay range for this position is $17.50 - $19.25 per hour. Offers will be based on the successful candidate’s experience.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Sets up and breaks down events, including but not limited to, tables, chairs, lighting, and other equipment needs.
- Assists with installation of seasonal exhibitions on-site and off-site as needed.
- Follows instructions and completes assigned tasks in an efficient matter with minimal oversight to ensure all deadlines are met with meticulous attention to detail.
- Adheres to safety procedures in all aspects of work, including the use of Zoo equipment. Uses good judgment and proper lifting techniques (team lift, etc.) while lifting/moving heavy items.
- Participates in safety and equipment training and certifications as assigned.
- Provides excellent customer service in a friendly, professional manner throughout the workday with the ability to interact with guests, answer questions and resolve problems
- May assist coordinators and managers with vendor logistics
- Maintains and inventories Zoo equipment to ensure safety, security, and proper operation. Problem solves and troubleshoots equipment as needed. Maintains order in storage areas and returns equipment to its proper place.
- Effectively communicates and works cooperatively with management and fellow employees before, during, and after an event.
- May assist with birthday parties by setting up and cleaning up venues, checking in guests, and facilitating birthday parties.
- May be trained to operate large equipment including but not limited to forklift, telehandler, scissor lift.
- May facilitate set up and breakdown operations for events under the direction of the Events Assistant Manager.
- Safely operate a vehicle for business purposes including but not limited to going to and from the zoo’s facilities and offsite.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support team and organizational goals.
Education and Job Qualifications
- One year of related paid experience in customer service required.
- One year of experience in a professional special events environment including, but not limited to fundraising events, corporate gatherings, social celebrations, or exhibitions preferred.
- Strong verbal English language communications skills required. Bilingual (Spanish or Hmong) communication skills a plus.
- California driver's license, valid vehicle insurance, enrolled in the CA Employer Pull Notice program and successful completion of the FCZ Drivers Training Program.
- Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
These are physical and mental requirements of the position as it is typically performed. - This position requires the employee to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift. The employee is regularly required to bend, stoop, reach, climb, or crouch to set up and break down event equipment.
- The employee is regularly required to lift or carry up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to ascend and descend ladders up to eighteen feet in height.
- Visual acuity to read printed instructions and safety information.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication (in person and via telephone and radio), at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position functions both indoors and outdoors, with possible exposure to heat, cold, inclement weather, Zoo environments and external events
- The employee may be exposed to environmental substances such as dust/dirt from Zoo grounds.
- The position works in close proximity to Zoo animals.
- Regular local travel and occasional out-of-town travel may be required.
- Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
