Title: Accountant

FLSA Classification: Full-time (35 hours), Exempt
Role Summary: The Accountant is responsible for managing the organization’s financial records, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable accounting standards, laws, and regulations. This role includes preparing and analyzing financial statements, reconciling accounts, overseeing accounts payable and receivable, and assisting with budget preparation and audits. The Accountant works closely with the finance team, and external auditors to ensure the integrity of financial information and support the organization’s operational and strategic goals.
Primary Job Responsibilities/Duties:
- Prepare, examine, and maintain accurate financial records and statements.
- Record and reconcile accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger transactions.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and funding agencies.
- Reconcile bank accounts and other balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Maintain fixed asset schedules and depreciation calculations.
- Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local accounting and reporting requirements.
- Assist with preparation for annual audits, including compiling supporting documentation.
- Process and review journal entries to ensure accuracy and proper classification.
- Monitor and track grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding restrictions.
- Collaborate with other departments to address financial inquiries and provide timely information.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Comptroller
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds.
- Must be able to travel to multiple NYC sites as needed.
Work Environment / Schedule Requirements:
- Office setting with regular exposure to computer screens and moderate noise levels.
- May be required to work shifts, including evenings or night tours and/or Saturdays, Sundays and holidays with holiday pay differential.
- This is a full-time, exempt position. While standard business hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, exempt employees are expected to work the hours necessary to effectively fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on organizational needs, deadlines, or events.
Qualifications:
- BA/BS or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field, with at least 2 years of accounting experience.
- AA/AS or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field, with at least 5 years of accounting experience.
- Proficient in QuickBooks and other accounting software.
- Advance knowledge of Microsoft office
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles preferred.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication ability
- Excellent analytical, quantitative skills
- Proven ability to handle multiple tasks effectively under pressure while successfully meeting critical deadlines
- Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and efficient
- Maturity, integrity, and sound judgment
- Must be able to read, speak, write, and understand English for administrative purposes.
- Must pass drug screening to be appointed.
