General Description:
The Lead Maintenance Technician is a directly involved, hands-on role responsible for overseeing and performing repairs, preventive maintenance, and facility improvements to ensure maximum efficiency and uptime across production and office areas. This active, technical position ensures that all maintenance activities related to buildings, machinery, equipment, vehicles, and grounds are carried out safely, sustainably, and cost-effectively. The Lead Maintenance Technician is also responsible for maintaining accurate records using CMMS software (MaintainX), and for ensuring that maintenance areas, workspaces, and parts storage remain clean and well-organized. Team members are expected to possess or actively develop the technical skills outlined below.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Takes a hands-on role in performing scheduled and unscheduled minor maintenance and repairs on buildings, equipment, utilities, and plant systems.
- Operates and maintains the steam boiler and water treatment equipment, tests water quality and adjusts equipment and chemical treatment as needed.
- Schedules and performs preventive maintenance procedures and repairs on building, production, and site mechanical and electrical equipment. Drives ongoing development of preventative maintenance programs.
- Participates in and executes continuous improvement of maintenance programs and production facilities.
- Properly stores, handles, and disposes solvents, oils, and other hazardous materials.
- Completes and manages written and computer-based records, including maintenance and standard operating procedures as directed and scheduled.
- Determines, specifies, and orders parts, supplies, and materials from external vendors as necessary.
- Assists various members of the management team in developing key programs, processes, policies, and initiatives related to safety and maintenance.
- Schedules and coordinates licensed contractors and/or professionals for major repairs or construction needs.
- Maintains, obtains, understands, and uses blueprints, drawings, O&M Manuals, and other technical documentation for plant and building equipment.
- Coordinates and organizes landscape contractors for general grounds maintenance.
- Manages cross-department maintenance requests and personally executes high-priority maintenance tasks.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technologies, Facilities Management, or other technical field a plus.
- Previous Boiler and Industrial Water Treatment training required
- Technical certifications in maintenance or building utility programs preferred
Experience/Qualifications:
- 5–10 years of industrial maintenance and repair experience; automated production equipment experience preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with proven problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Skilled in the use of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Experience with maintenance and repair of pneumatic systems, conveyors, HVAC, dust collection, and mechanical drives preferred.
- Steam boiler maintenance and operation experience required.
- Forklift operation experience required; certification preferred.
- Valid Oregon driver’s license required.
- Competent skills in machining, welding, and carpentry preferred.
- Physically able to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders, bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces.
- Effective communicator with strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and maintenance software (e.g., CMMS).
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability; works well independently or in a team.
