About the Department


Wake Technical Community College, North Carolina’s largest community college, is seeking an experienced law enforcement executive to lead and help shape the future of the college police department. With more than 72,000 adults served annually across seven campuses, a workforce training center, multiple community locations throughout Wake County, and an expansive offering of online learning options, Wake Tech plays a central role in the Research Triangle region’s educational and economic development. This position offers a unique opportunity to become part of an innovative leadership team at a dynamic, student-centered institution.

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer, the Chief of Police will lead a team of 29 sworn officers, 4 certified telecommunicators, and 3 civilian staff members. The chief is responsible for the development and growth of the Wake Tech College Police Department in the areas of daily police operations, emergency response planning, police policy and procedure creation, and organizational structure.  Wake Technical Community College desires a community-minded law enforcement executive who is:

  • able to motivate, inspire, and empower their staff to maintain a strong community-based policing structure
  • excellent in their communication skills and willing to strengthen relationships across the college
  • experienced in building a cohesive team to work collaboratively among all community stakeholders


The ideal candidate will be a law enforcement executive with a proven ability to lead, manage, and make difficult decisions in a timely manner. The desired candidate should have a creative approach to problem solving and an adaptable leadership style. They must be a strong and honest communicator who leads from the front.  Successful candidates must have at least 10 years of law enforcement experience with five of those years being in a command-level supervisory role. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is required. Preference will be given to applicants with law enforcement experience in higher education or comparable experience, an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission, and completion of advanced law enforcement leadership training, such as the NCACP Chief Leadership Institute, AOMP, or the FBI National Academy.

Position Duties

*Directs the development and implementation of a comprehensive Emergency Response Plan and implements strategies to manage security operations and address natural and man-made emergency situations at the college. 

 *Partners with other institutional leaders to align the role of college police within the Business Continuity Plan. The chief primarily prepares and updates the Emergency Response Plan as a part of the Business Continuity Plan.

*Ensures emergency preparedness drills such as inclement weather and fire drills are implemented and coordinated by staff on all campuses on a regular basis.  

*Trains faculty, staff and students in emergency preparedness.

*Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as with NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission Regulations.

*Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises all operational and administrative functions of the department including managing the budgets for assigned area of responsibility.

*Develops and presents reports and assessments on a routine basis to college leaders, such as the Clery Report. Oversees and maintains reporting system(s) for campus criminal activity.

*Plans and coordinates security needs for special events and functions for the college, including visits from high-level state and national leaders.
  
*Serves as the primary liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including the Wake County Sheriff’s Department, municipal police departments, the State Bureau of Investigation, and other emergency response organizations.   
 
Reviews construction/blueprint layouts of all new construction projects at Wake Tech to identify safety concerns, corrects security camera layouts, and reviews all areas for needed access control.

Regularly researches and analyzes national, state, and local emergency management regulations and trends and designs college practices and procedures to respond accordingly. This includes adjusting policies to align with guidance from NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards.

Leads the department in ensuring that all students, faculty, and staff are treated fairly and professionally. 

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

A thorough knowledge of criminal justice, law enforcement, fire, EMS, and higher education protocols and procedures

Strong personal and professional integrity, effective verbal and written communication skills, and a commitment to safety and community policing

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships throughout the college community and with external agencies

Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities

Must be computer literate with the ability to use Microsoft Office products and email

The position is on-call 24/7


Minimum Requirements 

Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field

10 years of law enforcement experience with five of those years being in a command-level supervisory role

Must hold state certification and be a North Carolina sworn law enforcement officer 

Must possess a valid North Carolina license and approval required by the College’s liability insurance carrier 

Must have no record of arrest for major offenses and no felony convictions 


Preferences

Law enforcement experience in higher education or comparable experience

NC Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate 

Completion of executive law enforcement leadership training, such as NCACP Chief Leadership Institute, AOMP, FBI National Academy, or equivalent
