About the Department
Position Duties
Review and evaluate Traffic Control Plans (TCPs) for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with City and MUTCD standards.
Inspect and monitor active work zones to ensure proper setup of traffic control devices and public safety compliance.
Drive to job sites citywide to perform field inspections and coordinate modifications to address real-time safety needs.
Communicate with contractors, City departments, and agencies to resolve deficiencies and coordinate road closures.
Identify unpermitted work and hazardous conditions in the right-of-way; document findings and enforce corrective actions.
Maintain inspection records, daily reports, and complaint logs; update internal systems and public alerts, including ADOT.
Process TCPs through the City’s permitting system; calculate and invoice fees, and ensure payments before permit approval.
Adjust or remove traffic control devices in the field to meet legal and operational requirements.
Support the creation of traffic management plans to meet safety and project-specific requirements.
Coordinate with emergency services during traffic-impacting incidents to maintain public safety and traffic flow.
Attend ongoing training to stay current with industry standards, technologies, and best practices in traffic control.

Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalency required.
Knowledge of civil public works infrastructure construction, including wet and dry utilities, concrete, and street construction, is preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the traffic control field, including preparation and review of Traffic Control Plans (TCPs).
Experience in general civil construction involving inspections, testing, and documentation is highly desirable.
Possess a valid Arizona Operator’s Driver’s License. Hold a current ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor certification.
Other Qualifications
This role requires the ability to read and interpret traffic control and civil engineering plans, perform basic math, algebra, and geometry, write reports, and manage construction documentation. Candidates must have strong communication, coordination, and computer skills (preferably in Microsoft Office), and be able to work independently while prioritizing daily tasks. The position involves significant driving and outdoor work in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends. Collaboration with City departments, contractors, and external agencies is essential, along with maintaining constant alertness and sound judgment to ensure safety and effective traffic management.
