Position Summary:
The Coal Mine Surveyor is responsible for accurately measuring, mapping, and analyzing the
land and structures within a coal mining operation. They play a critical role in ensuring that
all surveying activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
The Surveyor will support planning, design, and production activities, using a variety of
surveying instruments and techniques to ensure the mine's physical layout aligns with
geological and engineering plans.
Key Responsibilities:
Surveying and Mapping:
o Conduct accurate surveys of the coal mine site, including the surface,
underground workings, and surrounding areas.
o Create and update topographic maps, cross-sectional profiles, and 3D models
to assist in mine planning and development.
o Monitor and assess mine boundaries, pillars, and waste dumps to ensure
compliance with mining plans.
Mine Design Support:
o Collaborate with engineers and geologists to gather data that supports mine
design, excavation plans, and safety measures.
o Provide data on mining progress to update resource extraction plans.
o Advise on the alignment of tunnels, shafts, and other underground features.
Monitoring and Reporting:
o Track and report on changes to the mine’s landscape, including subsidence or
ground movement, and provide corrective recommendations.
o Maintain accurate records of all surveying data, including measurements, field
notes, and survey reports.
o Produce daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports for senior management.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety:
o Ensure all surveying work complies with national and local mining regulations
and safety standards.
o Perform risk assessments and ensure safe practices while operating surveying
equipment in hazardous mine environments.
o Contribute to the development of safety protocols for surveying activities.

Use of Surveying Equipment:
o Operate various surveying tools and technologies, including total stations,
GPS systems, laser scanners, and drone surveying equipment.
o Ensure the calibration and maintenance of surveying instruments.
Collaboration and Training:
o Work closely with mining engineers, geologists, and safety officers to
facilitate smooth communication and data sharing.
o Mentor junior surveyors and assist with training programs related to surveying
techniques and safety.
Environmental Considerations:
o Assist in environmental monitoring and land reclamation efforts by providing
necessary data and recommendations for sustainable mining practices.
Qualifications:
Education:
o A degree or diploma in Surveying, Geomatics, Mining Engineering, or a
related field. (Equivalent industry experience may be considered.)
Experience:
o At least 3-5 years of experience in surveying within the mining industry,

o Familiarity with underground and surface mining techniques.
Technical Skills:
o Proficiency in using modern surveying equipment, software (e.g., AutoCAD,
