Summary: Voices Against Violence Voices works to reduce the impact that sexual and domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities. We strive to achieve our mission by providing comprehensive services to individuals and families and fostering change through dynamic and multifaceted community education and prevention opportunities. 

Voices Against Violence seeks to achieve meaningful change in our community around domestic and sexual violence. The Outreach and Prevention Specialist contributes to that goal through our community outreach and prevention programs. From informal dialogues to professional training, the Outreach and Prevention Specialist shares information and provides training to a variety of audiences. The Outreach and Prevention Specialist will also provide direct services to a limited caseload of survivors.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Provide walk-in hours at The Framingham State University
  • Develop and implement creative strategies and curricula for outreach and prevention education
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide outreach and educational opportunities at community meetings, events, and schools 
  • Create educational and informational materials
  • Create and utilize metrics and data collection tools
  • Stay current on tends and research in the areas of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking and be able to incorporate them into presentations and trainings
  • Develop and maintain relationships and collaborations with community members, local organizations, area schools and colleges 
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for a variety of tasks including hotline coverage and medical advocacy. 
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and delivery of pre-service advocacy training 
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of outreach and special events
  • Provide trauma-informed direct services at the Voices Against Violence office, shelter, and hotline as well as at partner agencies and schools 
  • Provide appropriate referrals and linkage to referral sources
  • Provide transportation and accompaniment as needed to facilitate access to services/supports including court 
  • Participate in rotating after hours on-call for medical advocacy
  • Answer hotline as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records and keep current with data entry in Empower Date Base
  • Attend and participate in internal and external meetings and trainings as required including clinical supervision 
  • Ensure compliance with department, agency, and/or funder requirements and policies as well as SMOC policies and procedures
  • Attend community round tables and task forces as requested
  • Maintain confidentiality of client and agency information in accordance with federal and state laws and funder requirements
  • Flexibility with hours is required; able to work occasional nights and weekends
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements: 

 

  • Experience in developing and delivering educational curriculum (for teens and adults) 
  • Experience coordinating and conducting community outreach and education; comfort with public speaking including large group presentations required
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, education, social work, human services, women’s studies, psychology, or similar preferred; a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Previous experience with sexual assault or domestic violence including understanding of the root causes of sexual and domestic violence; commitment to working with victims and survivors; deep commitment to empowerment, social justice and social change required
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, organizational, written and verbal communication skills required
  • English proficiency (written, spoken) required, bilingual Spanish or Portuguese a plus
  • Able to manage competing priorities and responsibilities; able to multi-task and effectively deal with the stress of juggling daily tasks, ongoing projects, and the unpredictable nature of crisis work
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, LGBTQ inclusive environment; ability to interact with people from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to work both as a team member and independently; self-directed, engaging, energetic and self-motivated
  • Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation and meet insurance standards
  • Basic Office Skills (common computer programs and databases, typing, filing, answering phone); advanced knowledge of PowerPoint a plus
  • Must successfully complete a mandatory 45-hour pre-service training to satisfy the requirements of MGL 20J and 20K

 

Organizational Relationship:  

 

  • Directly reports to Outreach & Prevention Coordinator 
  • Indirectly reports to the Community Based Program Manager
  • Direct reports of this position are none  
  • Indirect reports of this position are volunteers

 

Physical Requirement: Ability to drive both long and short distances. Ability to access residential properties where no elevator is available 

 

Working Conditions: Some travel is required. As part of the responsibilities of this position, the Outreach and Prevention Specialist will have direct or incidental contact with clients served by SMOC in various programs. A successful background check is required. 

 

Remote Work Option: Remote work is permissible in some positions at SMOC depending on the key functions and responsibilities. The Outreach and Prevention Specialist, VAV position is eligible to work from home 0-20% of the week in scheduling coordination with the department manager.
