The Utilities Division is responsible for public health and safety, as well as safeguarding the environment, by providing crucial safe water and wastewater services. This position is part of the team that provides services necessary for human health, economic stability, and overall societal well-being. At the core of the mission of providing these services includes commitment to providing excellent customer service to our citizens, business partners, regulatory agencies, and other county divisions.
WATER PLANT OPERATOR I
MAJOR FUNCTION: Performs routine mechanical and manual tasks to operate and maintain potable water treatment facilities. Ensures proper functioning of treatment systems to meet regulatory and operational standards for water quality and distribution.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
Operational Support
• Operates pumping equipment with mechanical and automatic controls to ensure continuous water treatment and distribution.
• Reads and interprets meters and charts to monitor system performance.
• Performs daily operational checks at water treatment plants, making necessary adjustments to maintain compliance.
Sampling and Testing
• Collects water samples for bacterial and chlorine testing to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Conducts chlorine residual and pressure tests, and performs standard water quality assessments.
• Documents test results and maintains accurate operational records.
Maintenance and Custodial
• Conducts routine maintenance on plant equipment, including pumps and related systems.
• Performs custodial duties and general upkeep of plant facilities and grounds.
Other Responsibilities
• Performs other related duties as assigned to support water treatment operations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of:
• Corrosion control methods for drinking water systems.
• Lime softening, water softening, sequestering, sedimentation, and chemical treatment processes.
• Operation, maintenance, and repair procedures for water pumping facilities.
• Occupational hazards associated with water production and distribution.
• Federal, State, and Local regulations governing water treatment facility operations.
Skills in:
• Interpreting meters and charts accurately for system monitoring.
• Performing chlorine residual, pressure, and related water quality tests.
Ability to:
• Read and maintain operational records and charts.
• Follow oral and written instructions precisely.
• Perform labor-intensive tasks in various weather conditions.
• Lift and handle equipment weighing more than seventy-five (75) pounds.
• Perceive colors for visual inspections and testing.
• Coordinate eye and hand movements for mechanical tasks.
• Independently ambulate, drive, bend, stoop, sit, and stand for extended periods.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.
Possess a Class "C" Water Treatment Plant Operator license as issued by the Florida Department of Professional Regulation and/or Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment within this classification.
An equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that is directly related to the duties of this position may be substituted for the stated minimum qualifications, except for required licenses or certifications.
WATER PLANT OPERATOR II
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants.
Possess a Class "B" Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license as issued by the Florida Department of Professional Regulation and/or Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Possess a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
An equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that is directly related to the duties of this position may be substituted for the stated minimum qualifications, except for required licenses or certifications.
WATER PLANT OPERATOR III
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of water treatment plants. Possess a Class "A" Water Treatment Plant Operator’s license as issued by the Florida Department of Professional Regulation and/or Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment within this classification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have an active telephone number at the time of employment as employee is subject to call in emergencies.
All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
