At a Glance! Lower Columbia College is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled professional to join the team as an adjunct/part-time instructor in the Machine Trades program. 

LCC’s degree and certificate options provide graduates with a solid foundation of manual and CNC (computer numerical control) processes to prepare graduates to enter the workforce as machinists, millwrights, machine operators, programmers and/or other closely related fields. 

This position is responsible for teaching courses including, but not limited to Machine Shop I-III, CNC Machining Center Fundamentals, Turning, Milling and Advanced CNC. 

Instruction ranges from entry-level to advanced courses in machining and tool operation including safe use of hand tools, saws, grinders, drill presses, engine lathes, and vertical milling machines to more advanced projects focused on basic geometry, hole-making, turning, facing, boring, and precision measurement, and overall developing essential skills in safety and machine operation.

Courses are primarily delivered in person but utilize online learning resources. Training is available on related learning management systems. 

We are currently accepting applications on an on-going basis but have a need effective fall quarter (September) 2025 with options that may include day or evening instruction.

Compensation: 

Lecture: $80.68 per contact hour (887.48) per credit

Lab: $60.08 per contact hour ($1321.76) per credit

Field-based experience Instruction: $43.64 per contact hour ($1,440.16 per credit)

Position Duties

  • Impart expertise, enthusiasm, and professionalism in the instruction of machine trades courses. 
  • Teach and demonstrate a variety of manual machining and CNC processes for students.
  • Use effective classroom and instructional practices to prepare students for current  industry standards.
  • Conduct classroom lectures, lab work and projects to prepare students with skills required for entry-level employment.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times, students are knowledgeable of safety techniques and personal protective equipment, and that all equipment and machines are in safe working order.
  • Effectively prepare and present content to a diverse student population with various learning styles and abilities.
  • Assess, evaluate, and document student learning and achievement of course competencies and outcomes. 
  • Teach current learning outcomes and standards as identified in the course plan and syllabi.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students in a timely manner including the grading of assignments.
  • Utilize technology and online programs such as those available through Tooling U, Canvas--LCC’s Learning management system, to enhance student learning. 
  • Provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Participate in professional development activities to comply with WA State vocational certification requirements for instructors (applicable to adjuncts teaching more 2/3 workload for more than one year). WA Skills Standards: https://www.skillstandardswa.org/

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Machine Trades and three (3) years recent experience in the field; OR, training and experience resulting in Journeyman status; OR five years of equivalent combined education and on-the-job training.
  • Knowledge of and experience in machining, operating procedures and equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, precision measurement toolscutting tool geometryCNC machining procedures.
  • Strong understanding of safety standards and equipment operations. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in small groups and as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work, collaborate and interact effectively with individuals who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, education, and cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Requirements

  • One-year of supervisory experience.
  • More than five years of work experience as a machinist or closely related field. 
  • Experience with technology and computers including familiarity with common application programs such as Google and Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel.
  • Prior teaching experience in a vocational setting. 
  • Bachelor degree.
