Job Title: Lead Driver

Reports to: Transportation Supervisor

FLSA Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt 

Position Summary: 

In conjunction with the duties associated with the role of a Class A Driver, the Lead Driver is tasked with providing support to the Transportation Supervisor and Transportation Team. Responsibilities encompass planning, routing, interdepartmental communication, reporting, managing external contacts, and performing various tasks essential for the effective execution of our mission. The Lead CDL Class A Driver will be exposed to various weather conditions, including inclement weather, while operating, loading and unloading vehicles, requiring the ability to work safely and effectively in potentially challenging environments. This position also acts as a substitute for the Transportation Supervisor when necessary.

Position Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performing Class A Driver tasks including, but not limited to, operating both CDL Class A & B trucks, ensuring a safe and timely pick-up and delivery of products, actively loading and unloading vehicles having extensive internal and on-site interaction with agencies, suppliers, volunteers, and clients.
  • Adhere to all food safety requirements according to Serv-Safe and Feeding America and maintain AIB standards.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving (light warehouse work) once routes are complete.
  • In conjunction with the Transportation Supervisor develop and maintain cost-effective GBFB fleet routes using regional knowledge and GBFB routing software, assigning drivers to appropriate routes daily with a focus on safety and budget attainment.
  • Assists with actively ensuring fleet and driver compliance with all state and federal transportation regulations and maintain all transportation team files, focusing on legally required documentation.
  • Assists with monitoring and reporting driver performance against the fleet’s operational schedules using GBFB’s transportation management system and/or appropriate documentation.
  • Assists with scheduling, monitoring, and documenting GBFB’s vehicle maintenance and repair program to support safety & productivity goals.
  • Coordinate and communicate transportation status and issues to internal as well as external customers.
  • Support the Transportation Team goals with input on SOPs, cost improvement opportunities, and training programs.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Class A Driver's License is necessary, along with a minimum of 5 years of continuous driving experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, and Excel, is required.
  • Ability to operate and obtain certification for material handling equipment.
  • Experience in fleet maintenance and utilization of material handling equipment.
  • Candidates must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Proven ability to work in a team-oriented environment as a strong team leader demonstrating skills including coaching, mentoring, team building, collaboration, and conflict management.
  • Obtaining Serv Safe® certification is a requirement. HAACP experience is a plus.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background checks, as well as DOT drug and alcohol tests, is mandatory.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with WMS & ERP systems
  • Must have knowledge of DOT regulations and FMCSA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of food safety and other relevant rules and practices are preferred. .
  • Genuine appreciation of GBFB’s mission and the ability to communicate it.
  • Demonstrates the required digital competencies that result in the practical usage of the full range of digital technologies at GBFB.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull between the weights of 50 to 100 pounds safely.
  • Ability to work bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching.
  • Ability to drive up to 8 to 11 hours on a regular shift.
  • Ability to stand, walk and sit intermittently for 6+ hours/day.
  • Ability to work within an open-air warehouse and office environment.
  • Ability to work in different temperatures for ambient, cooler, and frozen foods.
  • Willingness to learn to operate material handling equipment and obtain certification.
  • Ability to hear and work in an environment with noises typical in a warehouse environment including horns, backing alarms, and flashing lights.
  • Ability the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.

Work Environment:

  • Onsite: This role follows a fully in person and on-site schedule. This means incumbents in this role will be required to work each workday from an assigned office work location including GBFB headquarters (70 South Bay Ave) and possibly any other work-related sites. CDL Drivers are assigned daily routes and a GBFB truck to drive throughout Eastern MA.
