Jackson County Animal Services is looking for a compassionate, dedicated individual to join our team as a Custodial Maintenance Worker. This position works as part of a team to provide daily care for the dogs and cleaning of the Jackson County Animal Shelter.

Position Duties

  • Qualified applicants should be comfortable working in a fast paced and demanding environment. 
  • Our custodial maintenance workers cover a variety of shifts that include weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

I. Position Summary

Performs a variety of tasks involving the custodial, maintenance, and landscaping for the shelter. Performs work within a framework of standard policies and procedures under general supervision, independently performing the full range of duties.

II.   Examples of Essential Position Duties (The following duties represent some of the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required or assigned.)

  • Performs daily cleaning of kennels, cages, and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment. Spot cleans in the animal and public areas throughout the day.
  • Keeps staff informed of concerns regarding animal behavior and health.
  • Assists with the movement of the animals throughout the shelter
  • Requests and stocks all kennel and cleaning supplies. Cleans, folds and stocks the kennel laundry throughout the facility.
  • Performs routine maintenance to equipment, buildings, and fixtures.
  • Performs basic landscaping including weeding, mowing and fertilizing.
  • Adheres to regulatory requirements, collective bargaining agreements, County and departmental policies and procedures, required trainings, as well as safe work practices.
  • Develops and maintains effective internal and external working relationships at all levels.
  • Has regular and reliable attendance. Overtime may be required. May work a variety of shifts and schedules, including nights, holidays and weekends.

III.  Minimum Requirements (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following requirements, physical demands and/or working conditions)

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent AND one year of work related experience; OR
  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job.

License, Certificate or Other

Requires possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

IV.  Other Requirements

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires general knowledge of cleaning methods and procedures; cleaning materials, chemicals, and solvents; care and maintenance of cleaning equipment; general knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and materials used in maintenance; procedures for cleaning, sanitation, safety and security; methods, practices, tools and materials used in building maintenance and animal kennel operations. Ability to prioritize changes and work well under pressure; use basic mathematics to perform related tasks; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; demonstrate excellent organizational and troubleshooting skills; schedule and prioritize work and manage time; work calmly with others under pressure; use a variety of office tools and equipment; and, demonstrate basic computer skills.

Physical Demands (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following physical demands)

Tasks involve frequent walking, standing, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching and climbing as well as lifting and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight and varying size and shape, sometimes overhead; perform strenuous or heavy manual work; dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs or body in the operation of equipment and tools. Tasks may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as heat, cold, wetness, dust, strong odors, strong and/or toxic chemicals, dust, noise and vehicular exhaust fumes. Requires driving.

Working Conditions (Performance of the essential duties of this position includes the following working conditions)

Incumbents are exposed to adverse weather, including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, sleet and hail. Incumbents are also exposed to dangerous or unpleasant conditions and substances, including noise, dust, chemicals, and biohazards. May include exposure to disruptive people.
