About the Department
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking to fill multiple Drainage & Wastewater (DWW) Collection Lead Worker positions. These positions will report to a DWW Crew Chief in the DWW System Maintenance Division of the DWW Line of Business Branch.
This is a great opportunity for DWW Workers who are ready to take the next step in their career. These positions will lead teams that plan, build, operate, and maintain over 2,100 miles of conveyance facilities that prevent sewer back-ups, reduce flood damage to public facilities and private property and help improve water quality in the Puget Sound area.
System Maintenance is a 24/7 operations division, and the selected candidates must be able to work all three (3) shifts: Night, Swing and Days. The selected candidates must be able to dispatch from any of the three (3) DWW reporting sites:

Position Duties
- Lead, coach, train and evaluate crews of DWW Collection Workers (DWWCW), DWWCW Apprentices, Equipment Operators, Truck Drivers, and temporary employees.
- Prioritize and delegate tasks in accordance with OSHA, WISHA and SPU Policies and Practices to ensure work is timely and efficiently completed.
- Use professional judgment in selecting appropriate guidelines for different safety situations
- Use effective communication to resolve conflicts before they escalate and know when to elevate problems to the crew chief
- Respect, support and assist with implementation of crew chief decisions
- Use a variety of sewer maps, plans, computers, and other electronic devices to document field conditions and actions taken to prevent or resolve system problems, document potential claims situations, or to elevate problems for resolution
- Assist crew chiefs in evaluating staff, input time sheets, develop training plans, and assess/resolve issues
- Receive work orders and record work details utilizing automated devices along with various software programs
- Ensure the safe operation of CDL Class B vehicles and other large vehicles on public rights-of-way
- Lead and work with crews that respond to urban flooding and other emergencies.
- Actively participate in team meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience in the construction, repair, maintenance, and installation of wastewater collection systems (combinations of education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).
- State of Washington Commercial Class B driver's license with a Tanker Endorsement and the Air Brake restriction removed.
- Flagging certificate.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge of drainage and wastewater systems to include the construction, rehabilitation, operation, and maintenance of systems
- Ability to read and interpret standard plans and maps
- Excellent safety record
- Possess excellent organizational skills and attention-to-detail
- Demonstrated proficiency with basic computer skills, mapping systems, Maximo, and Microsoft Office
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Flexible and willing to adapt to a constantly changing work environment
- Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of the operation of machines (such as closed-circuit television equipment and Educator trucks and pumps)
- Ability to think quickly, plan ahead, troubleshoot, and come up with alternatives
- The ability to develop and maintain respectful and inclusive working relationships within a multicultural workforce and with the multicultural customers and communities we serve.
- Ability to listen to others effectively, manage time efficiently and be of high integrity
Working Environment/Physical Capacities:
- Report to work as scheduled, on time and work a full shift
- May be required to work weekends, off-hour shifts, and extended shifts as needed or assigned.
- May be required to work on off-hours during high-priority work demands and during storms and other emergencies.
- Work is performed in all weather conditions
- Exposure to hazards such as noxious gas, hazardous waste materials, excavations, and vehicle traffic is inherent with position
- Work is physically demanding and may be done in shafts at considerable depth, in tunnels, and in other confined spaces
- Knowledge of confined space entry procedures is required
- Required to be on-call, and potential to be rotated on annual basis

- The full salary range for this position is: $44.03 - $47.51 per hour.
