Description
The Technical Sales Representative is responsible for managing customer inquiries, processing orders and quotations, and providing technical support. This role blends strong communication and customer service skills with mechanical aptitude to support sales of standard parts and custom solutions. The Technical Sales Representative will provide guidance on technical and mechanical product specifications and applications, and must be able to read technical drawings and clearly communicate complex product information to a wide range of customers.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Respond to customer inquiries by phone, webchat, or email and provide guidance on technical product specifications and applications
- Process incoming customer orders and catalog requests
- Identify and recommend appropriate products to existing customers based on their specific needs
- Prepare quotes for standard, modified, non-standard, and custom catalog items
- Coordinate with Purchasing and Technical Product Manager to obtain pricing and lead times
- Evaluate and, when necessary, decline quotation requests for items outside the Company’s product scope
- Follow up with customers regarding quotes and open inquiries
- Support Sales Representative Agencies and Company Territory Managers with lead follow-up and customer engagement
- Expand business with existing customers through upselling and cross-selling
- Re-engage customers who have reduced or stopped purchasing

- Inside sales experience, preferably in a technical or industrial setting
- Mechanical aptitude and understanding of engineered components
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and technical specifications
- Proficiency in both metric and standard units of measure
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficient in Windows-based systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial technology, or a related technical field preferred
- 3 to 6 years of experience in technical sales, mechanical products, or industrial components; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Language Ability
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
Math Ability
- Basic understanding of algebra and geometry
Reasoning Ability
- Capable of solving practical problems in situations with limited standardization
- Able to interpret various types of instructions: written, oral, diagrams, or schedules
Work Environment

Physical Demands
Regular use of hands for typing and communication. Frequent sitting; occasional walking, kneeling, or crouching. Occasionally lifting or moving items up to 10 pounds. Visual requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
