- Assist with the preparation of chemical and radiochemical samples.
- Support the team with sample logging and safe handling procedures.
- Help with preparing solutions and materials for use in lab tests.
- Carry out basic housekeeping tasks to keep the lab clean and well-stocked.
- Help monitor equipment and report any issues to senior staff.
- Follow safety rules carefully, especially when working with hazardous materials.
Starting your apprenticeship with Amentum is a great first step into a long-term career in science and engineering. If you complete your apprenticeship successfully, there may be the opportunity to move into a full-time role with us.
You’ll gain hands-on experience that can lead to careers in industries such as environmental protection, nuclear clean-up, energy, and laboratory science. There’s a growing need for skilled professionals who can safely handle, test, and analyse materials, and this apprenticeship will help you develop those valuable skills.
This apprenticeship programme also serves as a stepping-stone towards a rewarding career in chemical and radiochemical analysis, with the added opportunity for the apprentice to become a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech), recognised by the Science Council.
This apprenticeship can also help pave the way for further educational and professional advancement, such as our Level 6 Applied Chemistry Degree Apprenticeship, enabling you to take on more specialised roles or progress into leadership positions.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience
You enjoy practical work, pay close attention to detail, and can stay focused even when working to tight deadlines. You’re someone who can manage tasks independently, but also knows the value of being part of a multi-disciplinary team. You communicate clearly, ask questions when needed, and are always looking to learn.
You’ll need to be comfortable working in a highly regulated environment and understand the importance of quality, safety, and confidentiality. A basic knowledge of QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control) is helpful, but full training will be provided.
You may be a school or college leaver, or someone looking to retrain. Either way, if you're enthusiastic, proactive, and ready to learn, you’ll fit right in.
Formal qualifications aren’t essential for this role. What matters most is your genuine interest in chemistry and laboratory work, a practical mindset, good communication skills, and a strong willingness to learn and grow within a technical role at Amentum.
So how does the apprenticeship work?
Over 21 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. Together this will count towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Amentum who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

The best part? You’ll be earning a salary while you gain your qualifications, meaning no huge student loans to pay back at the end of the programme!
