Position Summary
The Paralegal assists attorneys primarily with multifamily mortgage lending and grant making operations. Additionally, the Paralegal supports work related to single-family transactions and other corporate matters. The role is part of a diverse group of experienced affordable housing attorneys and paralegals that tackle the multitude of legal issues arising in complex multifamily transactions and homeownership mortgage lending. The position offers an opportunity to apply talent and legal skills to advance a mission that is at one of its most critical junctures in history. The Paralegal participates in shaping solutions, innovating policies, and learning with a team that values collaboration and collective thinking. The Paralegal reports to the Deputy General Counsel in the Agency’s in-house legal department.
The Paralegal possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective interaction with clients, attorneys, and various departments within the Agency. They demonstrate a high level of accuracy when reviewing documents to ensure compliance with legal standards, along with excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, monitor schedules, and prioritize deadlines efficiently. The Paralegal is capable of drafting clear and concise legal documents, memos, and correspondence as needed, and is trusted to handle sensitive information with discretion, maintaining strict confidentiality. They work well in a collaborative team environment, providing reliable support to attorneys and other staff members. MassHousing operates under a hybrid work model; therefore, employees are expected to work on-site according to a schedule determined in collaboration with their manager and based on the needs of the role. The legal department works in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In response to business needs, the paralegal may need to report in person additionally as required and as needs change. During the first 90 days, the paralegal may be expected in the office more frequently for training and onboarding.
Essential Functions
Document Preparation and Closing Support
Work closely with the Agency’s Strategic Community Investments and Community Climate Bank staff to draft loan documents and grant agreements and review and track related closing diligence
Assist attorneys with preparation of loan documents and review of surveys, title policies, organizational documents, and other closing diligence with respect to multifamily loan and grant closings
Prepare closing agendas and review and track on-going diligence with internal and external partners, organize closing files, coordinate the document execution process including witnessing and notarizing, and manage post-closing matters
Assist with outside counsel during homeownership closings as required
Legal Research and Compliance
Conduct research using online research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Registries of Deeds, and Secretary of Commonwealth) and perform legal tasks related to on-going asset management and loan servicing tasks
Recordkeeping and Database Management
Maintain confidential and other records, documents, and files; compile, research and review information under the direction of an attorney; and update and maintain databases
Administrative and Office Support
Provide administrative support and perform general office duties; maintain calendars; relay information to applicable internal and external staff, and departments; process invoices; distribute documents; schedule tenant conferences; research and retrieve information
Security
Comply with MassHousing’s Information Security Program and all other Agency information security policies and procedures
Take responsibility for any Agency assets assigned to you
Promptly report any security events, incidents, or weaknesses to MassHousing’s Information Security Team
Minimum Qualifications
2+ years of paralegal experience as a commercial or residential real estate paralegal
Proficiency in legal research methods and familiarity with legal databases and resources
Solid understanding of legal ethics and the regulations governing paralegals
Strong competency in Microsoft Word and the ability to navigate or quickly learn document management systems
A valid Massachusetts Public Notary registration or the ability to obtain one
Eligibility to work in, and travel freely to and from, the United States without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s degree in paralegal studies or paralegal certification
