Job Summary
Provides supportive services to regular education, or special education classroom teachers
in emotional support classrooms. Tutors small groups or individual students to reinforce
previous learning and to strengthen skills.
Essential Functions
Both Specialties
• Tutors small groups or individual students to reinforce previous learning and/or increase
knowledge in a specific area of academic weakness, especially reading and arithmetic
skills.
• Serves as a resource person to small groups of students, has follow-up discussions of
materials presented by the teacher, and oversees small groups of students completing
independent assignments.
• Participates in a variety of educational experiences and activities as determined by the
teacher or principal in the classroom or school/facility where assigned.
• Reads and/or tells stories to students, assists and participates in games and activities in
the classroom or on the playground, and accompanies the class on field trips.
• Assists the teacher in successful classroom management when problems occur.
• Prepares classroom exhibits, displays and bulletin boards.
• Circulates through the classroom and assists students in the completion of assigned tasks,
and circulates through the school/facility as required by work assignment
Emotional Support Specialty
• Assists special education teacher in the implementation of Individual Education Plans
(IEP) which may include behavior support plans for students enrolled in emotional support
classrooms.
• Assists the special education teacher in teaching alternative skills, and creating a
supportive environment that encourages learning and appropriate behavior and builds a
supportive environment for students with emotional problems.
• Provides supervision of individual students when they are placed in “time-out” from large
group activities.
• Provides students with immediate feedback on their behavior and reinforcement when
appropriate.
Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Pass the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified test.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Both Specialties:
• Demonstrated knowledge of:
o classroom procedures.
o child growth and development.
• Demonstrated ability to:
o develop learning experiences and participate in learning activities.
o relate to and understand the learning process of children.
o use basic educational materials and instructional aids.
o prepare and distribute classroom materials.
o understand and follow written and oral instructions.
o communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
o establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Emotional Support Specialty
• Demonstrated ability to:
o learn special education classroom procedures.
o recognize potential causes of behavior problems and antecedents to their
occurrence.
