Urban Forestry Technician
(Term Relief)

The City of Lethbridge, Community Services, Parks Section is accepting applications for a term relief position for an Urban Forestry Technician to provide technical expertise on all issues relating to the City of Lethbridge urban forest. This position will work towards the preservation of the health, safety, longevity and diverse integrity of the urban forest ecosystem.
WAGE: $43.27 per hour
TERM: Starting mid-August 2025 for approx. 18 months. This position may require shift and weekend work
Specific Duties Include:
- Monitor detrimental and beneficial insect and disease populations on an ongoing basis and implement appropriate management or control measures when necessary
- Identify and eliminate existing or potential tree related safety hazards that may impact the health and wellbeing of staff or the general public
- Respond to customer service requests, complaints and inquiries as well as provide appropriate follow-up to ensure customer confidence and satisfaction in the municipal operations and staff
- Maintain vigilance, education and industry communication for the presence of exotic forest pests that may be destructive to urban or nature forest systems at the local, regional and national level as well as working with buffer zone or neighboring communities
- Maintain the Lethbridge elm tree inventory. Monitor and detect DED infected trees through the use of diagnostic skills, sampling procedures as well as the distribution and collection of pheromone-baited insect traps
- Educate, provide authorization and enforcement of municipal and provincial elm tree related bylaws, working with Municipal Arboreal Pest Inspectors and Bylaw Enforcement
- Develop and implement effective elm tree sanitation and removal programs for both public and privately maintained elms
- Prioritize and coordinate pest control methods with Pest Foreman and IPM Team
- Educate individuals, contractors and organizations to ensure they are following PHC and IPM best management practices
- Develop and implement specialized programs for tree watering fertilizing and pruning
Provide training or workshops as needed
Skills and Qualifications:
- Minimum High school diploma supplemented by up to two years of post-secondary education in a relevant area such as Forestry / Arboriculture, Horticulture, or Environmental Science
- Strong knowledge of arboriculture, horticulture, renewable resource management and general landscape skills
- Knowledge of park and forestry operations, equipment, standards, policies and safe work procedures
- Diagnostic skills with strong background in plant identification, botany, insects, diseases and abiotic disorders
- Hazard identification and analysis ability
- Proven customer service abilities
- Strong leadership capabilities, including the ability to foster a positive results orientated work environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as the ability to lead presentations
- Class 5 Drivers License
- ISA Certification would be an asset
