Description
This new position at Colorado Academy will consolidate several duties currently performed by multiple employees across several departments into one role. It is a full-time, 12-month position that reports directly to the Director of Operations. This is an exempt position as defined by the Department of Labor. The primary objective of the Risk Manager is to oversee the school's Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program, provide leadership for campus safety and security services, ensure compliance with OSHA and other applicable regulations, manage insurance claims processes, and provide systematic auditing of incident reports to support the overall safety and risk management objectives of Colorado Academy. A strong candidate will be able to demonstrate initiative and leadership in a newly established role at the school.
1. Enterprise Risk Management
- Conduct risk assessments using data, documentation, statistics, and market trends
- Perform proactive evaluations to identify potential risks that may affect the school
- Lead the development, implementation, and refinement of the school's ERM program in alignment with Board Policies.
- Maintain the School's Risk Matrix and ensure systematic identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks.
- Chair the ERM Task Force, facilitating quarterly meetings, rotating one-on-one interviews, and ensuring diverse representation.
- Provide quarterly risk management reports to the Risk Management Committee of the Board.
- Collaborate with the school Leadership Team on risk-informed decision-making.
- Ensure the ERM program integrates with the Emergency Response Plan.
- Review, improve, and update the ERM Policy, Emergency Response Plan, Standard Operating Procedures, and other key policies and procedures at least annually.
- Engage external experts for risk assessments or audits as needed.
2. Campus Safety & Security
- Supervise, instruct, and train all security staff, including internal and contract personnel.
- Coordinate security coverage for campus activities and events.
- Serves as back-up security to cover vacation/sick/personal leave of security officers.
- Support the security team by patrolling buildings, grounds, and parking lots daily to deter unsafe behavior and identify hazards.
- Assist security team with monitoring traffic and enforce parking and driving rules.
- Respond to and investigate incidents, accidents, and hazards.
- Lead regular safety and emergency response training for students and employees.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, high performance, and excellent customer service.
3. Workplace Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with public health regulations, OSHA standards, and other applicable workplace safety regulations.
- Conduct periodic workplace safety inspections and hazard assessments.
- Maintain documentation of safety programs, trainings, and compliance efforts.
- Partner with Facilities and Operations teams to address identified safety hazards.
- Lead the development and implementation of proactive safety initiatives.
4. Insurance & Claims Management
- Assist the CFOO in evaluating and maintaining appropriate insurance coverage (e.g., liability, property, cyber, workers' compensation).
- Oversee the timely and accurate filing, investigation, and management of all insurance claims.
- Serve as the primary liaison with insurance providers and adjusters as needed.
- Provide claims data and risk assessments to support insurance renewals and negotiations.
5. Incident Reporting & Auditing
- Oversee and ensure consistent, thorough documentation of all incident reports to ensure quality control, completeness, and compliance with laws and regulations.
- Review all incident reports to monitor and report on emerging trends or hazards.
- Conduct systematic audits of incident reports, no less than quarterly, to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
- Analyze incident data to recommend risk mitigation strategies.
- Report significant incidents and trends to the Leadership Team and Risk Management Committee.
6. Budget & Resource Management
- Develop and monitor the security and risk management department operating and capital budgets.
- Under the direction of the Director of Operations, oversee all security-related capital projects and major initiatives and implementations of systems and equipment.
- Ensure all security and safety equipment is functional, checked regularly, and well-maintained.
- Recommend and coordinate procurement of safety and security-related resources.
7. Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships and Memorandums of Understanding with various third parties that serve as Colorado Academy’s potential reunification sites.
- Serve as a central resource internally and externally in response to security, safety, and risk management concerns.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that reflects the values of Colorado Academy.
Requirements
- Knowledge of risk management principles and safety and security operations.
- Experience working as a risk manager or in related risk management or legal functions.
- Experience with ERM frameworks and methodologies.
- Familiarity with OSHA compliance requirements, workplace safety regulations, and other regulations relevant in a school environment.
- Experience managing insurance claims and working with insurance providers.
- Experience reading and interpreting contracts and insurance policies.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities.
- Proven ability to manage critical incidents and conduct investigations.
- Experience organizing, coordinating, supervising, and motivating staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare detailed reports and deliver oral presentations.
- Physically able to walk, run, climb staircases, bend, stoop, and carry 40 pounds minimum.
- Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Possession of a valid Colorado driver's license and excellent driving record.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Protection Professional (CPP), or equivalent preferred.
- Experience in a K-12 school environment is preferred.

The pay for this position is $95,000 - $125,000. Although this is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting, Colorado Academy reserves the right to pay more or less than the posted range. Any wage differential that may exist for the position does not relate to sex, gender or gender identity, but relates solely to a seniority system, a merit system, or relevant education, training and/or experience. Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance benefit programs are available, as is a 403(b) retirement plan. Eligibility for all benefit programs is defined by the applicable plan document.
