General Summary of Job Duties

 

We are a leading ship agency serving customers in major ports across the United States. Our ability to deliver time-sensitive, compliant port services relies on robust technology. As we strengthen cybersecurity, data governance, and analytics, we are seeking an experienced IT Director to lead IT operations, ensure compliance, and serve as the primary IT liaison with our parent company.

 

The IT Director will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, IT compliance, and analytics. This includes supporting the further development of internal systems, advancing the adoption of AI tools in the business, enabling Power BI reporting, and ensuring data integrity and secure, compliant user access/permissions across systems. You will coordinate with internal operations, external IT service providers, and corporate IT and Telecommunications teams, as well as the parent company’s audit/compliance teams, ensuring alignment with corporate standards and policies. As a key strategic partner, you will balance both hands-on technical expertise and leadership to align IT functions with business objectives.

 

Specific Essential Job Duties

IT Operations & Systems Management

  • Administer and maintain Microsoft Dynamics 365, Office 365, and custom internal systems.
  • Ensure system stability, backups, documentation, and access management.
  • Support Power BI infrastructure and support teams in developing and using dashboards.

Cybersecurity & Risk Management

  • Lead company-wide cybersecurity strategy, tools, policies, and training programs.
  • Monitor systems for threats, respond to incidents, and conduct regular vulnerability assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with maritime and other cybersecurity standards (e.g., IMO 2021), NIST, and ISO/IEC 27001.
  • Establish and enforce internal controls for user roles and permissions across all systems, ensuring access aligns with job responsibilities. 
  • Conduct regular access reviews to ensure permissions are up to date, appropriate, and free of conflicts (e.g., segregation of duties violations).
  • Work with department heads to resolve any overlaps or conflicting role assignments, especially in financial, operational, or administrative systems.

AI Integration & Governance

  • Identify and integrate AI tools to support operational efficiency and data insights.
  • Develop AI governance policies ensuring ethical, secure, and compliant use.
  • Monitor AI systems for performance, privacy risk, and adherence to emerging regulations.

Regulatory Compliance & Data Privacy

  • Ensure compliance with GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, and other data privacy laws.
  • Implement and maintain data retention policies, access logging, and breach response processes.
  • Support audits and collaborate with legal/compliance stakeholders.

Vendor & External IT Coordination

  • Manage IT service providers, cloud partners, and helpdesk vendors.
  • Ensure high service quality, effective escalations, and SLA enforcement.
  • Translate business needs into IT support requests and track resolution progress.

Cross-Functional Liaison & Parent Company Coordination

  • Serve as the primary IT contact for the parent company, handling all inquiries, reports, and escalations.
  • Act as the link between internal departments and external IT teams.
  • Communicate system updates, incidents, and changes across teams.

Strategic Planning & Budgeting

  • Align IT and cybersecurity strategy with company growth, risk profile, and compliance needs.
  • Lead IT budgeting, forecasting, and procurement.
  • Support digital transformation through secure and scalable technologies.

Other 

  • Abide by company HSEQ policies and procedures.

Qualifications & Requirements

 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in IT management, ideally within logistics, maritime, or other regulated industries.
  • Technical Expertise:
    1. Proven experience in internal controls and IT security, including role-based access control (RBAC) and managing internal user permissions.
    2. Skilled in coordinating with externally managed IT service providers and global/corporate IT teams.
    3. Strong background in systems integrations, particularly involving third-party or external systems.
    4. Ability to drive business outcomes by delivering efficient and tailored IT solutions that align with organizational goals.
  • Languages: Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • Preferred Certifications:
    1. Cybersecurity: CISSP, CISM, CEH, CompTIA Security+
    2. Compliance: CIPP/US, CIPM, ISO/IEC 27001 Practitioner
    3. Cloud/Analytics: Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate, Azure Administrator
    4. Project Management: ITIL, PMP
  • Key Competencies:
    1. Strong communication and coordination skills with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
    2. In-depth understanding of access control, cybersecurity, and compliance standards.
    3. Excellent analytical, strategic, and detail-oriented problem-solving abilities.
    4. Proven track record in vendor management and effectively prioritizing business needs.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • This position is based in a professional office environment and requires prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer.
  • Work is typically performed in a climate-controlled setting with standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
  • Occasional lifting of office supplies or documents weighing up to 25 pounds may be required.
  • Minimal exposure to physical risk; however, employees must follow all company safety protocols, including proper ergonomic practices and general workplace safety procedures.
  • May be required to attend safety briefings or training relevant to the maritime industry to support understanding of company operations.
  • Must adhere to all workplace policies and contribute to a safe, organized, and professional office environment.
