The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled work associated with locating and marking County-owned utility lines in support of excavation and construction projects.
Position Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Coordinates the County’s response to Utility Protection Center (UPC) requests (Call Before You Dig): receives and reads locate requests from the Digtrack software sent from the UPC; responds to excavation notices in accordance with established time requirements; inputs requested information into system; use laptop computer or other devices to receive, document, and close out excavation notices.
Locates utility lines for manholes, service connections, valves and other utilities: travels to site; reads and interprets utility maps/plans to identify the type and size of underground utilities; visually inspects predefined construction to determine whether utilities could come into conflict with proposed excavation; operates different electronic detection equipment to locate underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits; marks location, depth, and length of utility lines; takes photos; updates maps and computer databases; maintains related documentation.
Responds to complaints and questions related to utility line locates; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution; resolves situations involving complex issues.
Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; wears protective gear.
Ensures routine maintenance is performed on assigned truck and equipment; conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; fuels trucks; loads and secures materials; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
Uses a variety of hand tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including manhole pick, pry bar, paint stick, paint, shovel, probe rod, measuring wheel, metal detector.
Prepares, types, proofreads, and/or completes various forms, lists, directories, logs, notices, charts, graphs, spreadsheets, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, policies, procedures, manuals, handbooks, directories, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, proofreads, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Communicates with department heads, county employees, contractors, and the public and outside businesses and agencies as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.
Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in utility maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License.
