About the Role: Ready to Make a Difference? Ready to Lead?
The Plant Mechanic is responsible for preventative and emergency maintenance on the City’s Sewage Lift Stations, following all local and state regulatory requirements. You’ll operate and maintain large generators and by-pass pumps, supervise support personnel, and ensure that all systems remain operational under normal and emergency conditions.
In this role, you will:
Perform scheduled inspections and maintenance on lift stations and associated equipment
Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild pumps, electrical systems, and mechanical components
Supervise and train Mechanic Helpers and Maintenance Workers
Operate and maintain large generators and by-pass pumps during weekly checks and emergency response
Use computer systems to document work, report issues, and ensure compliance with city/state guidelines
Perform physical tasks including lifting up to 75 lbs, climbing, bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces
Respond to after-hours emergencies on a rotating on-call schedule — including during inclement weather
Required training includes: Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Electrical Safety, and PPE use. Strong communication skills, computer proficiency, and a commitment to safety are essential.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Valid Driver's License
- 4+ years of related experience (e.g., water or wastewater plants, lift stations, pumps, etc.)
- Grade 2 NC Water Pollution Control Collection System Operator ("or" the ability to obtain certification within 2 years from hire date to remain in position)
- Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Microsoft Office
- Extensive electrical experience.
- Grade 3 Water Pollution Control Collection System Operator

Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 6:15am - 4:45pm
