The Senior Commercial Underwriter provides analytical support for commercial banking including an independent analysis of the creditworthiness of customers and prospects and ensuring the bank maintains a solid and strong credit culture. Extensive knowledge of banking principles, policies and procedures. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as oral and written communication skills with a high level of attention to detail. Able to organize and present complex situations in a clear concise manner; able to set priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines; team player, positive attitude; maintains and ensures confidentiality.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Responsible for spreading financial statements, preparing statement analysis and covenant checks in support of the commercial lending function.
- In addition, the Senior Commercial Underwriter (SCU) will be responsible for preparing comprehensive credit analyses on complex Commercial and Industrial (C&I) and Commercial Real Estate (CRE) loans that facilitates the credit approval process, with very minimal supervision by Underwriting Manager (UWM).
- Provide high-level analytical support in underwriting and analyzing commercial credit facilities while assisting Portfolio Managers (PMs) and CRMs in managing customer relationships.
- Be involved in the approval process, identifying and discussing key risks and mitigants of a credit with Commercial Relationship Managers (CRMs) and Senior Credit Officers (SCOs).
- UWM to provide production goals based upon needed level of supervision and complexity of deal flow.
- Complete and approve covenant checks per Bank policy.
- Complete and approve annual reviews per Bank policy.
- Participation in transaction structuring and relationship strategy meetings with management, as needed, to justify and explain information in the analysis when warranted.
- Assist CRM in presenting credit packages for approval to Officers Loan Committee, as needed.
- Other special projects, as needed.
Requirements
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Commercial Loan Origination Processes
- Spread financial statements as provided by Commercial Relationship Manager (CRM).
- Maintain responsibility for completion of the Commercial Credit Application once engaged by CRM, and after receipt of Opportunity Memo explaining the request, utilizing independent judgment and discretion with matters related to Bank policy.
- Maintain responsibility for completion of the Commercial Credit Memo (approved template to be used) once engaged by CRM, and after receipt of Opportunity Memo explaining the request.
- Work directly with the RM to ensure accurate reflection of financials.
- Ensure accurate reflection of lending matrix authority and proper loan coding.
- Ensure recognition of Policy Exceptions.
- Participate in deal team meetings between Relationship Manager, Market President and Senior Credit Officer as required.
- Attend external meetings with clients and prospects, as needed.
- Provide editing to document as dictated by acceptance of term sheet and results of deal team meetings.
- Participate in credit decision with Market President, Senior Credit Officer, Executive Credit Officer and Chief Operations Officer.
- Finalize credit package with conditions precedent as needed to ensure Loan Closing has a complete approval package. Commercial Underwriters are to adhere to Service Level Agreements as outlined in Workflow Procedures.
- Assess and opine on adequacy of appraisal reports and compliance with policy.
- Attend Officers Loan Committee meetings, contributing to the approval discussion of key risks and mitigants on a credit identified during the underwriting process.
- Complete and approve internal real estate valuation reviews to verify credit is compliant with Bank approvals / guidelines.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Portfolio Management
- Prepare and/or review (if prepared by centralized spreading team) spreads for commercial relationships upon receipt based upon requirements of Loan Agreement.
- Prepare thorough financial analysis of spreads.
- Follow procedures to ensure that the system of record is documented with their viewed items and forwarded for signature to CRM.
- Identify portfolio weaknesses and trends and alert CRM and UW Manager to deteriorating portfolio conditions.
- Complete and approve covenant checks per Bank policy.
- Complete and approve annual reviews per Bank policy.
- Other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Although no direct supervision of employees is required, the individual will be an experienced member of the team and will be expected to provide training, coaching and mentoring to the less experienced members of the team (i.e., CUW-1).

Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university
- 5 - 7 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, required
Language and Interpersonal Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public

Mathematical Skills
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
