About the Department

This advertisement is to establish a list that will be used to fill Vehicle and Equipment Shop Supervisor vacancies for the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Utilities, as they occur, for a period of one year.
A Vehicle and Equipment Shop Supervisor supervises, schedules, and reviews job assignments and work performance of assigned personnel; schedules and evaluates the inspection, servicing, repair and cleaning of a variety of vehicles and equipment; and operates a computerized information system. Must develop rapport and provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers and vendors.
Vehicle and Equipment Shop Supervisor positions are located within the Public Works Department and Tacoma Public Utilities.
Public Works Department: We provide essential public services by designing, building, maintaining, and preserving public infrastructure that enhances the quality of life for the people of Tacoma in a fair, responsive, sustainable, and equitable manner. Public Works Fleet Services operates 2 separate shops: The Fleet Operations facility (Shop 3) is the primary maintenance shop for the City's vehicles and equipment, servicing the Tacoma Police Department, Public Works, Environmental Services, Etc. The Fleet Annex shop (Shop 4), located at the City's solid waste facility, maintains the heavy-duty refuse fleet.
Tacoma Public Utilities: We provide electric service to the city of Tacoma, Fircrest, University Place, Fife, parts of Steilacoom, Lakewood, Joint Base Lewis-McChord and unincorporated Pierce County as far south as Roy. The Fleet Operations facility is the primary maintenance shop for the City's vehicles and equipment.
Position Duties
An equivalent combination to:
Graduation from high school or equivalent
- One-year lead or supervisory experience AND
- Six of the last ten years working as a journey-level mechanic
- Completion of a recognized automotive machinist apprenticeship program AND
- Four years' journey-level experience in automotive mechanical maintenance and repair work
- Completion of a truck mechanic vocational program AND
- Four years' journey-level experience in automotive mechanical maintenance and repair work.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Washington Commercial Driver's License, Class A with appropriate endorsements.
Must provide own full complement of mechanic hand tools if required.
- Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Vehicle and equipment shop and office environment; subject to contact with chemical products, noise and fumes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Principles and practices of supervision and training.
- Oral and written communications skills.
- Principles, procedures and techniques of operating an automotive service and repair facility.
- Maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engines.
- Procedures, tools and diagnostic equipment used in vehicle and equipment servicing, maintenance and repair.
- Maintenance and repair of specialized automotive equipment, to include air, hydraulic, transmission and brake systems.
- WISHA Standards and the hazards and safety precautions of the automotive industry.
- City organization, operations, policies and objectives.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Understand, follow and provide oral and written directions.
- Work independently with little direction.
- Train others.
- Operate specialized equipment used in the automotive industry.
- Operate a personal computer with applicable software applications.
- Work and support others in a customer service environment.
