About the Department
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled public health nurse to join our team in a key leadership role. This advanced-level nursing position serves as the lead nurse coordinator for the postpartum maternal-newborn home visiting program and the well child health clinical program.
Position Duties
This is a dynamic opportunity for a nurse who thrives in both clinical and community-based settings. The position is split between direct patient care and program coordination, with responsibilities that include:
- Leading the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the maternal-newborn home visiting and child health programs.
- Providing in-home education, physical assessments, and counseling to high-risk mothers and newborns.
- Coordinating well child clinic services, including developmental screenings, immunizations, health education, and referrals.
- Developing and revising program policies and standing orders, and recommending updates to leadership.
- Overseeing data management, quality assurance, and program improvement efforts.
- Serving as the primary liaison with community partners, healthcare providers, and internal teams.
- Conducting community outreach and formal presentations.
- Participating in case management meetings and mentoring new staff and student learners.
This role also includes follow-up care for children with elevated blood lead levels in Alamance County. The nurse will collaborate closely with environmental health staff to support affected families and help organize lead screening events across the community.
Additional responsibilities include supporting other public health clinics after training, assisting with emergency response and shelter staffing, and contributing to agency-wide health initiatives.

Other Qualifications
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: This position requires a strong foundation in public health nursing, with thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles, and hands-on practices. The nurse in this role must have the clinical skills to conduct comprehensive health histories and physical assessments to identify deviations from normal. A deep understanding of public health resources is essential, along with the ability to coordinate services and support systems to meet client needs.
The ideal candidate is aware of current social and economic issues that impact public health, including health disparities, and is committed to addressing these challenges through reducing barriers to care. Strong leadership skills are needed to plan, guide, and support and lead the work of others. This nurse must demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions in complex situations.
Success in this role depends on the ability to build trust and work collaboratively with customers, healthcare providers, and community partners. Accurate record-keeping, clear communication, and the ability to interpret medical documentation are also essential. This position requires someone who can apply the principles of public health nursing in a way that improves the human condition.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and three years of professional nursing experience including two years of Public Health nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Fluent in both Spanish and English both oral and written.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A current license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina by the N. C. Board of Nursing. Valid N.C. driver's license and have access to a personal vehicle.
