JOB SUMMARY:  The Extended Day instructor will work with the SUN Site Manager and Extended Day Coordinator to provide a class in the Fall term up to 12 hours per week. Additional hours may be available for curriculum planning or assistance with community events.  This is a temporary position, instructors will only be working when SUN extended day activities are in session 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday, unless specified otherwise. If the position is a good fit there are opportunities to renew the position for the following terms (winter, spring, summer).

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach after-school activity classes for children.
  • Supervise groups of 10-15 children, ages 6-12, and support supervision of larger groups of children.
  • Track and ensure academic and social emotional development of students.
  • Take attendance of your class and supervise snack time.
  • Act as a positive role-model for students.
  • Ensure students are in a safe environment.
    • This includes being informed of up to date polices and procedures concerning behavior expectations, safety drills, bathroom policy, student pick up procedure, evacuation guide, unmet student protocol, out of school safety protocol, and ICE protocol.
  • Develop curriculum for activity classes.
    • Class activities will be prepared by the instructor. The instructor will inform SUN Site Manager and Extended Day Coordinator of class curriculum 2 weeks in advance, along with any supplies needed.
    • It is important to us that our staff LOVE the subjects they are teaching. We offer a variety of classes from each STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) field as well as movement-based classes like soccer or dance. We are open to almost anything! Please indicate your interests so we can plan appropriately.
    • Provide behavior management, redirect inappropriate behavior, and guide students through restorative conflict-resolution.
    • Establish clear classroom expectations.

 

Please note:

Fall term dates are September 30th to November 20th. There will be orientation and training prior to the start of classes.

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely meet the following requirements:

  • Experience providing academic and recreational activities to students in after school environments.
  • Experience working with school-aged children from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Desire and ability to work with children to ensure an enriching, positive, and safe classroom setting.
  • Ability to effectively work within a strength-based, integrated youth support service delivery system.
  •  Ability to document work continually and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Possess strong organizational and time-management skills and ability to prioritize and complete multiple and varied tasks;
  • Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from diverse lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures;
  • Willingness to work as a team member and support the mission and goals of Impact NW.
  •  Must be able to complete and pass an Oregon Background check including fingerprinting prior to start date.

 PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:

  • Familiarity/experience with Microsoft Office software and basic computer programs.
