About the Department
Position Duties
Youth Services Section
- Accurately performs youth services functions including program reservation, reading level assistance, and placing holds, in person, by email and on the phone.
- Effectively uses email, phones, computers and printers, library software and calendars, library self-checks and scanners, and meeting room technology.
- Interacts helpfully with patrons to assist them in using library computers and printers, locating and using library materials, and participating in youth activities.
- Develops engaging programs and activities for children, teens, and families, including early literacy and story times, educational programs, computers and software, crafts and lifelong learning, and programs which promote cooperation.
- Assists with library-wide events, offers reading recommendations, and maintains displays.
- Enforces the Rules of Conduct, library policies, and maintains order at the libraries.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Library principles, methods, materials, and practices.
- Reader interests, books, and authors.
- Objectives of a public library.
- How the library is organized, including services, sections, shelves, aisles, and other library spaces.
- Basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including counting money and tracking number of uses.
- Reading and alphabetizing accurately to place materials in their proper order.
- Evaluating tasks and priorities to complete work accurately and efficiently.
- Significant skills in customer service.
- Significant skills in the use of email, cell phones, computers, software applications such as Outlook, peripheral devices such as printers, and searching in a library catalog, a database or the Internet.
- Accurately sort and file materials alphabetically, numerically, and chronologically.
- Accurately shelve using the Dewey Decimal System and other organizational methods.
- Carefully handle library materials, using appropriate tools, containers and book carts.
- Assist patrons to locate materials and refer patrons to other appropriate assistance in the library.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with patrons, partners, and co-workers.
- Serve the public and interact with co-workers with honesty and integrity, addressing difficult situations with professional composure.
- Understand, follow, and explain policies and procedures, submit forms, and demonstrate steps using technology.
- Speak effectively and in a friendly manner to patrons at the front desk, on the phone, and during card signups, classes, presentations, or library events.
- Ability to express ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work mornings, days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as necessary.
- Bend, stoop, twist, and reach to shelve or move a variety of library materials.
Other Qualifications
- An associate’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent (60 college or university credits).
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Experience working with cash registers, computers, or other technology to assist customers at a front desk, or experience developing or presenting a class, program, or instruction preferred.
- One (1) year experience working with the public. Experience working in libraries, bookstores, educational or cultural organizations preferred.
