Mortuary Transport Technician
Location: Washington, D.C. (On-site)
Job Type: Part-time (10–25 hours per week, on-call)
About EPIARX
EPIARX Diagnostics is a private pathology practice based in Washington, DC. Our work happens behind the scenes, but it matters deeply: we support pathologists and medical examiners in uncovering the “why” when families need answers the most.
We’re growing—and we’re looking for someone who can handle one of the most sensitive, yet critical parts of our work: the respectful and professional transport of those who have passed.
About the Role
This isn’t just a driving job. As a Mortuary Transport Technician, you are the bridge between the moment of loss and the science that follows.
You’ll be responsible for transporting human remains from hospitals, homes, and funeral homes to the autopsy suite, medical examiner’s office, or back to funeral homes. You’ll be the calm in an emotional storm, handling people and logistics with equal parts professionalism and compassion.
A note on the practical side: This job involves driving a transport van across the DC metro area (sometimes longer trips), so being confident behind the wheel is a must.
This is an on-call role with sporadic and variable hours. Flexibility and responsiveness are key.
What You’ll Do
- Safely transport human remains between designated locations
- Interact professionally and compassionately with families, funeral home staff, and medical personnel
- Maintain a clean, well-stocked transport vehicle (supplies include gloves, body bags, etc.)
- Assist with moving remains from trays or gurneys and provide postmortem care when needed
- Coordinate receipt and release of remains for autopsies and help with related administrative tasks
- Answer and triage calls, emails, and faxes as part of the autopsy operations support
- Provide on-call coverage (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and occasional overnight travel as needed
What You Bring
- High school diploma (or equivalent) required; mortuary experience is a plus
- A clean driving record and ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening if selected
- Comfort working in close proximity to deceased individuals
- Physical ability to lift, pull, and push significant weight
- Professional demeanor, emotional composure, and empathy in sensitive situations
- Strong interpersonal skills and clear communication with grieving families and professionals
- Attention to detail, ability to follow procedures, and a strong sense of reliability
- Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office tools is a plus
Who Thrives in This Role
You are someone who:
- Knows how to stay calm and professional, even when others are not
- Can be counted on to show up, follow through, and handle delicate tasks with dignity
- Doesn’t mind being on the road—actually, you like it
- Can work independently while still being part of a team that depends on you
