What You'll Do

As a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) at Avalara, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and reliability of our tax compliance software solutions. You will collaborate with development teams to design, implement, and execute automated test scripts, perform manual testing when necessary, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our testing processes.

  • Develop and maintain automated test scripts using industry-standard tools and frameworks.
  • Collaborate with software developers and quality assurance engineers to identify test requirements and design test cases.
  • Execute test cases manually and through automation, ensuring thorough coverage of functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Analyze test results, identify defects, and work with cross-functional teams to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Participate in Agile development practices, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospective meetings.
  • Contribute to the improvement of testing processes, tools, and techniques to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Stay updated with industry trends and best practices in software testing and quality assurance.
  • Design and Develop Test Automation Frameworks: Create and maintain robust, scalable, and maintainable test automation frameworks using tools like Selenium, TestNG, JUnit, or similar technologies.
  • Automate Test Cases: Develop automated test scripts for functional, integration, regression, and performance testing to ensure the quality of Avalara's software products.
  • Execute Test Suites: Execute automated test suites, analyze results, and report defects to development teams using defect tracking tools like Jira or Bugzilla.
  • Collaborate with Development Teams: Work closely with software developers, product managers, and QA engineers to understand requirements, review code changes, and ensure test coverage for new features.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines using tools like Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, or similar platforms to enable continuous testing and deployment.
  • Performance Testing: Design and execute performance testing strategies using tools like JMeter, LoadRunner, or Gatling to evaluate system performance under load and identify performance bottlenecks.
  • Test Strategy and Planning: Contribute to test strategy, test planning, and test case design activities to ensure comprehensive test coverage and alignment with business goals.
  • Defect Management: Track and manage defects throughout the software development lifecycle, collaborate with development teams to resolve issues, and verify defect fixes.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain test documentation including test plans, test cases, test scripts, and test reports to support testing activities and compliance requirements.
  • Mentorship and Training: Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to junior team members, share best practices, and contribute to the overall growth and development of the testing team.


What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in software testing, with a focus on test automation and quality assurance
  • Strong programming skills in languages like Java, C#, Python, or similar languages used for test automation
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks like Selenium, Appium, or JUnit.
  • Experience in API testing using POSTMAN, Performance and scalability testing
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Knowledge of software testing principles, techniques, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities, with a focus on teamwork and continuous learning.
