508 Accessibility / Remediation Specialist

We are currently expanding our remote independent contractor team and seeking experienced 508 Accessibility / Remediation Specialists to join us.
508 Accessibility / Remediation Specialists are subject matter experts who ensure that all documents, digital products, websites and other communications are inclusive and compliant with federal Section 508 standards and WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA guidelines. This role is integral to ensuring the stakeholder provides equitable access to all citizens, including those with visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive disabilities, and upholding a commitment to digital equity for all users. Candidates must hold at least one professional certification to be considered.
Responsibilities:
- Remediate digital documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX) to ensure they are tagged correctly for 508 compatibility.
- Ensure video content includes accurate closed captioning, transcripts, and audio descriptions.
- Assist with accessibility audits on state websites, mobile applications, and software.
- Utilize Assistive Technologies (AT) to simulate user experiences and identify barriers to access.
- Validate code against W3C/WAI standards.
- Collaborate with Prisma project managers to understand 508 accessibility project expectations and specifications.
- Maintain professionalism and results-oriented performance.
- Perform assigned tasks by a given due date.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Three (3) years of experience performing 508 accessibility and remediation for federal or state government entities.
- *Certifications (current) from any of the organizations listed further below. You must upload one or more of these certifications to be considered.
- Exceptional technical/software skills, e.g.: Assistive Technology (AT) software. Candidates must be "power users" of the software that people with disabilities use to interact with the government's digital services. For example, screen readers, screen magnifiers, and speech recognition software.
- Advanced expertise and technical knowledge of Accessibility Checker remediation software.
- Proficiency using built-in Accessibility Checkers in PDFs, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Advanced (expert) in simplex and complex elements of a PDF: tables, embedded media, graphics, graphs, maps, flowcharts, interactive formulas, unique symbols and characters, etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Familiarity with non-English languages.
