Zoox is seeking a highly motivated and experienced System Safety Engineer to champion manufacturing quality control for safety-related special characteristics identified in our system safety analysis. This pivotal role is essential to support our ongoing manufacturing scalingand ensure that our production processes meet the quality, reliability, and safety standards. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between manufacturing excellence and system safety engineering.
In this role, you will:
Safety requirements definition: Translate system-level and safety case requirements into clear, measurable, and enforceable manufacturing requirements for the production floor (e.g., tooling requirements, process steps, inspection criteria) and in-process quality control.
Production process review and safety inputs: closely collaborate with the manufacturing and quality control teams to review and ensure the production processes have suitable equipment, tooling, and testing for the quality assurance of safety-related special characteristics. Review and approve configuration management and traceability process.
Safety clearance support: Provide essential support for the product's safety clearance process. This includes generating and contributing to comprehensive reports that demonstrate how the manufacturing process, potential gaps, and control measures are being considered and addressed within the overall safety clearance documentation.
Continuous improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives in manufacturing processes based on quality data, field performance, and safety-related non-conformances.
Qualifications
Master's degree or higher in a STEM discipline (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering).
5+ years of progressive experience in a relevant manufacturing environment, preferably with high-volume or safety-critical products.
Proven experience shipping complex hardware products with large-scale manufacturing involved.Significant experience with quality control methodologies and tools (e.g., PFMEA, Control Plans, Statistical Process Control (SPC), Root Cause Analysis).
Strong background in System Engineering principles, especially the translation of top-level system requirements into lower-level manufacturing and test requirements.
Demonstrated ability to contribute to the larger picture of safety analysis and fail-operational design.
Bonus Qualifications
Experience in robotics, aerospace, medical devices, or automotive (industries with stringent safety and manufacturing requirements).
Familiarity with manufacturing scaling from low-volume to high-volume production.
Proficiency in statistical analysis tools for manufacturing data.
