Position Overview
The Pharmacy Technician provides pharmaceutical support services within the Health Services Department at FCI/FDC Tallahassee. This role assists the onsite Pharmacist and medical staff in the preparation, dispensing, inventory management, and documentation of medications for an adult incarcerated population. The position requires strict adherence to pharmacy standards, institutional security procedures, and confidentiality requirements in a correctional healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
-Assist the Pharmacist with preparing and filling daily prescriptions
-Interpret prescription orders from medical and dental providers
-Enter prescriptions into the pharmacy computer system and generate labels
-Select, prepare, and dispense medications as directed
-Operate daily pill line and dispense medications according to approved procedures
-Maintain accurate and up-to-date inmate medication profiles
-Inventory medications and supplies; report low stock levels and ordering needs
-Refill and conduct weekly inventory of automated medication dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis)
-Ensure medications are stored according to manufacturer guidelines (temperature, light, refrigeration)
-Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the pharmacy workspace
-Interact professionally with inmates regarding medication use and provide patient education as appropriate
-Address medication-related questions and concerns with the Chief Pharmacist
-Assist medical staff as needed with pharmacy-related tasks
-Perform duties requiring prolonged standing, stair climbing, and occasional heavy lifting
-Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
-Minimum of two (2) years experience working as a Pharmacy Technician
-Active Florida Pharmacy Technician certification
-CPR certification
-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
-Strong attention to detail and accuracy in medication handling
-Ability to function effectively in a secure correctional environment
Security & Compliance Requirements
-Must successfully complete a federal background investigation
-Must pass drug screening
-Must attend mandatory institution orientation and security training
-May be required to provide proof of immunizations or communicable disease testing
-Must comply with all institutional security, privacy, and conduct regulations
-Must immediately report any adverse licensure or certification actions
Work Environment & Attire
-On-site pharmacy within a federal correctional institution
-Professional attire required; jeans, t-shirts, sandals, tank tops, and sweatwear are not permitted
-All medications, pharmacy equipment, and supplies are provided by the institution
