Position Overview
The Phlebotomist provides laboratory and specimen collection services within the Health Services Units at FCI/FDC Tallahassee. This role supports clinical staff by performing venipuncture, specimen processing, laboratory equipment maintenance, and recordkeeping in a secure correctional healthcare environment. The position requires independence, attention to detail, and strict compliance with clinical, security, and confidentiality requirements.
Key Responsibilities
-Perform venipuncture for laboratory analysis and medical testing
-Collect and process urinalysis specimens
-Maintain laboratory waiting lists and schedule inmates for lab services
-Prepare, package, and ship biological specimens to contracted laboratories
-Maintain laboratory logs and documentation in compliance with applicable guidelines
-Perform daily maintenance of laboratory equipment and report service or repair needs
-Maintain adequate laboratory and phlebotomy supplies and report restocking needs
-Communicate specimen collection and service details to Health Services leadership
-Report laboratory-related issues or concerns to appropriate supervisory staff
-Explain procedures to patients to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation
-Maintain professional conduct and security awareness during all patient interactions
-Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
-Graduate of an accredited Phlebotomy program
-Minimum of six (6) months documented experience as a Phlebotomist
-CPR/AED certification
-Ability to perform all phlebotomy procedures independently
-Strong organizational and documentation skills
Security & Compliance Requirements
-Must successfully complete a federal background investigation
-Must pass drug screening
-Must attend mandatory institution orientation and security training
-Must comply with all institutional security, privacy, and conduct regulations
-Must maintain professional boundaries in an environment with frequent inmate contact
Work Environment & Attire
-On-site clinical laboratory setting within a federal correctional institution
-Approved attire includes scrubs or cargo pants with polo shirt
-All laboratory equipment, supplies, and materials are provided by the institution
