Salary Range: $50,000 to $55,000
About Shelter House
Shelter House was established in 1981 as a grassroots responder to the homelessness crisis in Fairfax County. Since then, the organization has grown alongside the community it serves, partnering with government, private funders, and community members to prevent and end homelessness and domestic violence. Today, Shelter House employs over 100 staff members across multiple programs and locations. About the Role
The People and Culture Coordinator is a key member of the People and Culture team who provides recruiting and HR operational support across the organization. This role partners with hiring managers and internal stakeholders to support hiring, onboarding, and employee lifecycle processes, while helping ensure People and Culture operations are organized, accurate, and responsive.
Key Responsibilities
Recruiting and Hiring
• Serve as a primary point of contact for candidates throughout the hiring process
• Post and manage job openings across recruiting platforms and career sites
• Draft, update, and maintain job descriptions in partnership with hiring managers and People and Culture leadership
• Review resumes and applications to identify qualified candidates
• Conduct initial phone screens and coordinate next steps with hiring managers
• Schedule and coordinate interviews across multiple programs and locations
• Support hiring managers with interview logistics, candidate tracking, and follow up
• Prepare and send offer letters and coordinate pre employment steps
• Initiate and track background checks, reference checks, and I 9 documentation
• Maintain accurate and timely candidate records within the HRIS and applicant tracking systems
• Support onboarding from offer acceptance through first day readiness
• Represent Shelter House at two annual job fairs, including preparation, staffing, and candidate follow up
Onboarding, Training, and Employee Lifecycle
• Coordinate and facilitate virtual and in person new hire orientations
• Manage and track new hire training requirements, including required compliance and program specific trainings
• Ensure training completion is documented and reported as needed
• Ensure all onboarding documentation is completed accurately and on time
• Process and track internal employee changes including transfers, promotions, and role updates
• Assist with offboarding processes including documentation, exit meetings, and system access deactivation
HR Operations and Systems
• Maintain employee personnel files in compliance with federal, state, and organizational requirements
• Partner with the People and Culture Partner to verify payroll entries and employee changes for accuracy
• Maintain accurate HR records within the HRIS and generate reports as needed
• Process check requests and administrative items for the People and Culture department
Collaboration and Projects
• Build strong working relationships with staff and leadership across the organization
• Provide responsive and professional People and Culture support to employees and managers
• Support department initiatives, audits, and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
• Three to five years of experience in Human Resources, recruiting, or talent coordination
• Experience supporting full cycle recruiting or high volume hiring
• Experience drafting or updating job descriptions
• Experience coordinating or tracking employee training preferred
• Proficiency with Microsoft 365
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment
• Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally at all levels
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
• Working knowledge of federal and state employment laws
Physical Requirements
• Annual TB test required
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
• Ability to lift items weighing 10 to 20 pounds
