Demiurge Studios is seeking a Lead Environment Artist with demonstrated experience creating high-quality 3D game art for an open-world action game in Unreal Engine 5. In this role, you will create a complex, immersive environment that takes into account unique gameplay elements. You will collaborate closely with designers and other cross-functional teams (including offshore developers) to specify, model, and texture a wide range of assets: environments, props, and watercraft. You thrive in a small but capable team, communicate effectively, and relish the opportunity to make a substantial impact on content creation in a fast-paced environment.
If you excel at building visually compelling spaces that enhance gameplay, are a self-starting problem-solver, and enjoy adapting to a dynamic workflow, we’d love to hear from you!
Note: Relocation assistance or remote work may be available for this role. The majority of the development team is located on the East Coast of the US, so being able to work in that time zone is a must.
Responsibilities:
Own and champion the world environment—drive key visual and technical decisions with Visual Direction, Production, and Level Design to deliver a coherent, consistent quality experience across the game
Collaborate across teams and vendors (Design, Technical Art, Engineering, contractors/partners) to maintain and improve agile pipelines that meet visual/performance targets and resolve art/tech issues
Make and uphold key visual decisions for levels/worlds, ensuring quality and consistency across the game
Model and texture diverse 3D assets, including (but not limited to) environments, props, vehicles, and vegetation.
Contribute creative ideas throughout production and help maintain art documentation
Work with leads to hit project milestones, adapting to changes in a dynamic development environment
Participate in playtest sessions, gather feedback, and refine assets to align with gameplay and art goals
Overcome artistic and technical challenges that entail navigating production constraints and ambiguity
Integrate level art content using Unreal Engine 5, including Blueprints, the Procedural Content Generation (PCG) framework, and other relevant tools
Integrate and tune VFX, lighting, and atmospherics to create cohesive environments aligned with brand principles and visual direction
Qualifications:
7+ years of experience as a 3D artist in the games industry, with demonstrated contributions to at least one shipped open-world title.
Proficiency in low- and high-poly modeling, texturing, and industry-standard tools (3ds Max/Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Photoshop).
Understanding of how game systems intersect with open-world spaces to highlight unique gameplay moments.
Understanding of underwater environments (preferably in game development, but also IRL).
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to work well in a team-focused environment and take initiative on tasks.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.
Preferred
Traditional illustration or fine arts training
Experience with environment set dressing and lighting.
Familiarity with console and PC platforms.
2+ shipped titles.
A passion for games—and playing them regularly.
A variety of outside interests!
