Project Title: Translating Century-old Eastern European Texts

Faculty Mentor: Erich Lippman

Project Description: Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants built St. Peter and St. Paul Russian Orthodox church between 1915 and 1918 in the village of Bramble, MN. The church was seemingly never consecrated and never supported a priest. Instead, the priest from Chisholm, MN, traveled monthly to perform services there. Given the difficulty of farming in Minnesota’s cutover region, the Great Depression sealed the fate of the village and the church. It closed its doors in 1932. Now, more than 90 years later, the church still stands in good repair, despite having no congregation since its closure and no other use. What explains this church’s longevity, despite the lack of congregational support? The story of the St. Peter and St. Paul church up to 1932 is not unique, but its survival as a congregationless church is.

Transferable Skills: Research and presentations.

Duties and Responsibilities: Each project has its own timing (number of hours per week and number of weeks), as determined by the individual faculty mentor. See the CURI Digital Olaf database for individual project descriptions and details.

There is no GPA requirement that must be met in order to apply for the program, but a student’s academic record will be considered during the selection process. Skills are dependent on individual projects.
