Job Title:  Assistant Camp Director 

Classification: Long term Seasonal

Reports to: Program Director

Compensation: $25/hour, 30-35 hrs/week February – mid-June 

$115-$130/day mid-June - early September (room & board included)

Organization Overview:

Our Summer Camp Program was founded in 1924 and continues to serve youth ages 5-18. During the summer months, we offer overnight summer camp at our beautiful 552-acre camp, Camp Namanu, bordered by the vibrant Sandy River and presided over by century old trees. Position Overview:

This position is responsible for partnering with the Program Director in the implementation and management of all summer camp programs at Camp Namanu including coordination of curriculum, training, hiring, accreditation, risk management, and all other aspects of program. This position will be one of four or five ACDs that help the Program Director ensure summer camp is operating safely and smoothly. This position will support planning, hiring, program development in the spring and serve as a summer camp ACD living on site during the summer with a scaled in focus.

During the summer, this position will focus on one area of camp. This could be Logistics, Program, Units, or Health & Wellness. Below are short descriptions about each:

  1. Logistics: They are directly responsible for leading the camp logistics, which include camp check in/check out procedures, coordinating camp scheduling meetings, camper and staff mail, lost and found, and creating camper info reports for each session.
  2. Program: They are directly responsible for implementation of curriculum and any program accommodations required to make staff and campers successful. They supervise a large amount of program staff and program areas including Rocks & Ropes, Waterfront, Meadow, and more.
  3. Units: They are directly responsible for supervising Unit Coordinators and providing secondary support to Counselors serving 2nd – 12th grade campers. As well as collaborating with the healthcare team and reviewing camper information, meeting with staff to discuss program and/or schedule adjustments, and directly engaging campers with specific needs
  4. Health & Wellness: This position is responsible for maintaining the healthcare center and working in collaboration with the rotating weekly on-site Healthcare Managers. This includes assisting in care to campers and staff, reviewing health forms, informing staff of camper healthcare medication and support needs and working with the Camp Nurse to ensure healthcare policies are followed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1. This role will come in contact with campers, families, visitors, vendors and employees. Each of these persons may have visible and invisible qualities that makes that person unique. This includes race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, religion, national origin, gender identity, and other identities. This role requires sustaining an inclusive and equitable learning and working environments by having respectful and considerate behavior, thoughtful and constructive speech to all.

2. Partner with Program Director in directing camp programs in accordance with local/state/federal ordinances, Camp Fire policies, and ACA standards. This includes but is not limited to risk management, inclusion practices, and staff management.

3. Partner with Program Director in directing camp implementation including, but not limited to policy review, registration, recruitment, hiring, promotion, staff training, on-site management, family communication, and evaluation. Collaborates with key year-round and seasonal Camp Fire Columbia staff as needed.

4. Schedule and lead regular observation time, check-ins, and team meetings with direct reports. Provide written and verbal feedback to direct reports and support them in their professional growth.

5. Takes leadership role in implementing inclusive, trauma-informed, innovative, and engaging programming that honors Namanu history while also advancing programming to meet the needs and values of our organization and community.

 

Job Duties:

Program

· Works with Camp Fire Columbia year-round team to design, plan, and post social media content.

· Partner with Program Director on the planning and development of non-summer programs and events. 

· Ensures the health and safety of camp staff and campers.

· Assists with deepening the program curriculum for summer camp through aligning with camper feedback, best practices, and partnership.

· Onsite residency at Camp Namanu required from early June through August.

· Shares on-site night and weekend support responsibilities at camp to include support of camp, rental clients, and Camp Fire events.

Staffing

· Partner with Program Director in the recruitment and hiring of summer staff.

· Provide clear direction and priorities to direct reports and support them in their professional development.

· Ensures that high expectations and accountability are balanced by fun, compassion, and support.

· Leads team-building activities to develop and sustain high staff satisfaction and moral. 

· In accordance with HR policies, provides on-going feedback, conducts frequent informal and formal performance assessment.

Evaluation and Program Improvement

· Coordinates program quality assessment and supports improvement planning.

· Coordinates evaluation process for Overnight camp.

Operations

· Partners with Program Director to lead successful ACA accreditation.

· Review and monitor some camp budgets in collaboration with the Program Director.

· Transports youth on public highways and roads in Portland, Sandy, and surrounding areas.

Alignment

· Ensures the highest level of customer service for families and campers.

· Work with other Camp Fire programs for development and alignment of programming.

· Ensure camp programs align with our organizational commitment to equity and inclusion. This includes regular evaluation and review of program to ensure it is a safe and welcoming space for many identities including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and differently-able bodied people. 

Other

· Travels primarily to Sandy, OR (Camp Namanu) and also infrequently travels out-of-the-area which may include overnight stays.

· Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.

· Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers, volunteers, parents, and contractors; including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises seasonal summer staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Recreation, Administration, or a related field; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Skills:

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Computer Skills:

Has advanced specialized computer skills that require experience of applicable software in such fields as graphic design, video production, technical writing, and web-based training.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

This position requires a valid Oregon Food Handler’s card and First Aid & CPR certification. Strong knowledge of ACA Accreditation or willingness to invest time in learning is required. High Ropes, Challenge Course facilitation, and/or Lifeguard certification is preferred but not required.
