Department: Advice and Guidance 
Salary:  £32,021-£34,977 per year
Job Type: 1 full-time (35 hours per week)  Fixed term position until December 2026.

The Role
Career and Learning Advisers work within the Careers Advice and Guidance Team to support in the delivery of the colleges career programme. Main duties including providing impartial on course and exit careers advice and guidance to prospective and existing students aged 16-18 and 19+.
This can include advice on relevant programmes of study and progression routes, responding to queries from the college online application system, support with applications to higher education, group work, attendance at college and external events and working with curriculum and other support staff to deliver a service that meets the needs of all students and clients.

Key Responsibilities


  1. To provide impartial information, advice and guidance to current students and college applicants on education, training, employment and vocational opportunities.
  2.  To assist students and college applicants to access digital resources, independent guidance tools and careers information
  3.  To plan and deliver high quality group sessions to students
  4.  To make detailed records of interactions with students and enquiries using the college information systems
  5.  To refer students and college applicants to appropriate individuals and agencies, both inside and outside college.
  6.  To use and maintain appropriate records of information and advice activities in line with confidentiality and GDPR policies and procedures
  7. To acquire and maintain up-to-date knowledge on national and local labour market information, course information, progression routes, career opportunities and relevant financial information
  8. To observe the quality standards related to this area of work and as a team member, to monitor, evaluate and review the work of the Careers Advice and Guidance Services within the quality assurance framework of the service.
  9. To carry out the duties of the post in line with College policies and procedure
  10. To participate fully in staff development and in-service training as required.
  11. To carry out such other relevant and appropriate duties within the framework of a post of this grade that may from time to time be required and at a location determined by the needs of the service.
  12. To represent the college and Careers Advice and Guidance Team during open days, careers events and external partner activities
  13. Work flexibly across college centres and at external events across Merseyside. This may on occasions include some evening work.
  14. Work for significant periods later August / September during enrolment and occasionally during the evening

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise


Essential Criteria:
  •  A recognised guidance qualification at Level 6 or working towards this qualification level.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of and experience using a range of IT systems
  • Ability to work under pressure and operate flexibly
  •  Awareness and commitment to following procedures relating to safeguarding; confidentiality; data protection and equality, diversity and inclusivity within an educational environment
  •  Recent experience delivering information, advice and guidance
  •  Experience of providing 1 to 1 careers, information and advice and guidance to young people and adults
  • Experience planning and delivering high quality career group work
  •  Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of service users
  •  Ability to produce clear, consistent and accurate records using college information systems
  • Commitment to own self development and the ability to reflect on own performance
  •  Experience of supporting students with applications to higher education
  •  Ability to build and form good relationships with students, staff and stakeholders within college and externally
  • Awareness of barriers, financial and otherwise, that can prevent students from accessing education
  •  Ability to work within and/or lead teams. This will include the need to show initiative and work under pressure
  •  Ability to manage own time effectively and prioritise workload
  •  Able to meet deadlines and meet key targets
  • Commitment to own self development and the ability to reflect on own performance


Desirable Criteria:

• Broad knowledge of the range of post 16 education, training and employment opportunities available
• Experience using a range of digital careers resources and platforms
• Ability to produce high quality careers and LMI resources
