About the Team and Role

At eBay, trust and simplicity define every interaction between our users and our platform. The Cloud Security Engineering team ensures that these experiences are not only secure but also seamless and intuitive.

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager who will lead a team at the intersection of Identity and Access Management (IAM) and User Experience (UX) — delivering security systems that are powerful yet frictionless. You will guide the design and development of innovative authentication and access solutions that protect millions of global users while enhancing their journey through clear, consistent, and delightful experiences.

This is a leadership role for an engineering manager who is equally passionate about security, usability, and customer trust, and who can influence how eBay designs secure access across all its products and developer ecosystems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and inspire a team of engineers focused on building world-class IAM and access management services that prioritize user experience.

  • Collaborate with UX designers and product managers to reimagine how users interact with identity systems — ensuring that security feels seamless, not restrictive.

  • Champion usability in security by implementing features such as adaptive authentication, contextual access, and self-service access management.

  • Drive engineering excellence in the development of APIs, SDKs, and developer tools that make security integration simple and delightful for internal and external teams.

  • Partner with global security, privacy, and compliance teams to align technology decisions with data protection and regulatory standards.

  • Mentor and grow engineers, cultivating expertise in both secure system design and user-centric engineering.

  • Define metrics for success, measuring adoption, performance, and user satisfaction to continuously refine IAM experiences.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years of people management or technical leadership.

  • Proven success in building and delivering identity, authentication, or access management platforms.

  • Strong technical background in backend engineering (Java, Go, or Node.js) and API design.

  • Expertise in authentication and authorization protocols such as OAuth2.0, OIDC, SAML, FIDO, and passwordless strategies.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex security requirements into user-friendly designs and workflows.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to bridge technical and design perspectives.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience building customer-facing IAM or security UX products such as login experiences, account recovery, and multi-factor authentication flows.

  • Familiarity with Zero Trust architectures and adaptive security frameworks.

  • Exposure to usability testing and design-thinking methodologies within engineering teams.

  • Understanding of developer experience (DX) principles for API-driven platforms.

  • Strong product mindset — balancing security rigor with customer empathy and usability.
