We’re a growing California-based firm offering full-service solutions in cultural resources, biology, landscape architecture, permitting, and more. Anticipated tasks for the Staff Archaeologist will vary based on qualifications and experience, but may include:
- Archaeological survey
- Serve as archaeological survey team lead
- Identification and recordation of precontact and historic-era cultural resources on California Department of Parks and Recreation 523 series forms
- Cultural resource monitoring during construction projects and ground disturbing activities
- Participation in field excavation as part of Phase I, II, and III investigations
- Use of ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 software to collect and manage field data
- Collection of GPS data for site management
- Delivering Workers Environmental Awareness Trainings with an emphasis on cultural resource sensitivity
- CHRIS records search submittals and results analysis
- Historic-era map and aerial photograph analysis
- Native American tribal outreach and coordination
- Focused writing assignments under the supervision of technical report authors
Additional Information About the Job:
- Work locations will be varied including a wide range of terrain types in both rural and
- urban settings; conditions will occasionally be physically challenging.
- Field assignments will be project specific and will depend on the volume of work at any given time and will vary from project to project.
- Assignments would occur during the normal work week (Monday through Friday), with occasional requirement for weekend work.
- Overnight stays and extended field assignments are possible. In these cases, HELIX will provide lodging and per diem for days worked.
- The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic, positive attitude and experience working in a team-oriented environment.
Professional Field Kit Expectations:
Candidates must have the field equipment necessary for conducting field work, including appropriate outdoor clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and tools necessary to complete ordinary and industry-standard survey and excavation tasks, including metric tape measures, sight-bearing compasses, clip boards, and trowels.
Compensation:
Hourly wages will be based on qualifications and experience. Expected pay range of $28/hour to $38/hour.

Requirements
Minimum Requirements for Staff Archaeologist:
- Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
- Familiarity with the principles of archaeological field survey.
- A minimum of two years of experience conducting archaeological fieldwork that may include survey, excavation, in-field analysis, monitoring, and documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Possess a valid California Driver’s License and 3 years clean driving record.
Additional skills considered a plus for Staff Archaeologist:
- Demonstrated cultural resource management experience including leading archaeological surveys, site recordings, excavations, cultural resource monitoring, and report writing.
- Expertise in the principles of archaeological field survey, site identification, and cultural resource recordation.
- Proficiency in the collection of archaeological field data and ability to lead others in this practice.
- Professional experience working on a range of archaeological site types and cultural resources/material culture commonly found on cultural resource sites within the San Francisco Bay Area.
- Masters degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field
- Member of the Register of Professional Archaeologists
- Meets the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications in Archaeology
