The Director of Coding is responsible for the managing and directing the consolidated coding functions of the coding audit team for the FMOLHS. Implements policies and procedures to effectively and efficiently achieve set metrics and targets. The Director of Coding is supervised by the Sr. Director of HIM

Responsibilities

  1. Leadership
    1. Interviews, selects, trains staff in a manner that ensures efficient coding operations and complies with the relevant regulations governing the employment process.
    2. Effectively disperses work load across coding staff in order to meet assigned metrics and targets. Maintains staffing at the appropriate level in an effort to promote optimal efficiency.
    3. Ensures that staff is adequately educated and trained on all processes, procedures and methods. Holds staff accountable to ensure that all coding processes are completed within established timeframe and in accordance with established policies.
    4. Evaluates the performance of personnel in order to ensure personal development, efficient operations, and the attainment of goals and objectives. Administers performance reviews in a timely manner and gives appropriate job related feedback.
    5. Researches problems as they relate to area of supervision. Contacts the appropriate persons to resolve issues. Keeps director aware of the progress of the problem resolution.
  2. Performance Improvement and Quality
    1. Maintains appropriate controls to ensure compliance with Federal/State Regulations and organizational policies to include HIPAA, Privacy, Safe Environment. Serves as the liaison with governmental agencies, FMOLHS Compliance, and facility leadership.
    2. Works closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure that coding is accurate. Trends data and makes operational changes for improvement in compliance with the practice quality improvement initiatives. Reports data timely and accurately.
    3. Promotes the quality and efficiency of his/her own performance by remaining current with the latest trends in field of expertise through participation in job-relevant seminars and workshops, attendance at professional conferences, and affiliations with national and state professional organizations.
    4. Produces requested or routine reports and provides appropriate feedback to physicians, administration, managers, etc. in a timely manner. Maintains an organized work environment; promotes organization and cleanliness throughout area of supervision.
  3. Program Management and Daily Operations
    1. Responsible for policy and procedure implementation. Coordinates ongoing inservice education and training as new processes, procedures and government regulations are introduced into the work flow and as current processes are refined. Develop and implement team building strategies for work unit.
    2. Responsible for ensuring the respective goals are met in areas of oversight.

Qualifications

 Experience - 8 years' experience in medical coding including previous leadership experience.

 Education - Associate's or Bachelor's degree in HIM field

 Licensure - Certified Coding Specialist
