JOB GOAL:
Monroe High School is seeking a dedicated and experienced coach for the Varsity Boys Cross Country team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about cross country, committed to fostering a positive and inclusive team environment, and focused on the holistic development of student-athletes. This role requires a coach who can effectively manage a varsity team, teach fundamental running techniques, and promote a culture of sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence. The Varsity Boys Cross Country Coach will collaborate with other coaches and staff to ensure the overall success of the cross country program.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Coaching experience in cross country or track and field at the high school or competitive youth level is highly preferred.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Demonstrated ability to teach proper running form, endurance training, and race strategies.
- Proven ability to create a positive, competitive, and supportive team culture.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with experience in planning practices, meets, and conditioning programs.
- Ability to mentor and develop student-athletes, emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and personal growth.
- Excellent communication skills to build rapport with athletes, staff, and parents.
- Commitment to upholding and enforcing MHSAA rules and the school district’s codes of conduct.
- Willingness to set high academic and athletic standards for all team members.
- Ability to collaborate professionally with school staff, administrators, and other members of the school community.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and coach the Varsity Boys Cross Country team during practices, meets, and competitions.
- Develop and implement training programs that focus on endurance, strength, injury prevention, and peak performance.
- Organize and conduct regular practice sessions that emphasize conditioning, technique, and race strategies.
- Foster a positive and inclusive team environment that encourages discipline, resilience, and respect for others.
- Monitor academic performance and encourage a healthy balance between athletics and academics for all team members.
- Assist in the recruitment and development of athletes, encouraging participation in cross country at all levels.
- Uphold and enforce all MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) rules and regulations as well as Monroe High School’s codes of conduct.
- Collaborate with other coaching staff, including assistant coaches and junior varsity coaches, to ensure consistency in training and program goals.
- Communicate regularly with parents, administration, and other school personnel regarding team progress, events, and expectations.
- Attend team meetings, professional development workshops, and other required functions as directed by the Athletic Director.
