General Summary

• The Senior Patrol Officer (Sergeant) will perform routine surveillance of hospital premises, grounds and buildings, while also functioning as a first line supervisor within the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Creates schedules for the Department of Public Safety and contributes to the performance evaluation process.

• Directs subordinate officers in providing leadership and training in accordance with policies and procedures.

• Keeps accurate records and documentation of routine activities, rounds, and incidents in compliance with standards established by the Chief of Public Safety.

• Serves as instructor and trainer of Public Safety Officers to ensure proper protection and safety of all customers.

• Provides proper supervision and guidance to department members holding the job classification of Public Safety Officer.

• During times of crisis or emergency, the Sergeant will assist the Chief, his or her designee, and/or the administration in dealing with the crisis in an efficient and professional manner.

• Assists the Chief with keeping accurate call statistics and minor office duties.

Education

• Education: Graduate of accredited law enforcement academy required.

Work Experience

• Minimum of 1 year road experience as a Patrol Officer or 4 years active experience in Law Enforcement Detention.

Certification/License

• BLS through the American Heart Association required. Must be a commissioned law enforcement officer in good standing with the Missouri state POST Commission, or have held a valid law enforcement commission during the three years immediately prior to appointment.

Mental/Physical Requirements

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, perform math skills and calculations related to position, read and interpret policies and procedures related to safety and security of facility, codes and compliance regulations. This job will require standing, walking, sitting, lifting. Must possess good communication skills, basic computer skills and the ability to intervene and manage multiple crisis situations and perform effectively and professionally while under stress. This position can be physically, mentally and emotionally challenging and demanding. Must possess exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written. Must have knowledge of hospital codes and emergency procedures.

Working Conditions

• May experience long periods of standing and walking. Will come in contact with patients, family members, hospital visitors and employees. May encounter unpleasant conditions and exposure to heat, cold, noise, dirt, inclement weather, chemicals, gases, water, fumes, overhead pipes, infectious disease and waste. Will encounter aggressive, angry and abusive people.
