Position: Student Support Services Coordinator
Location: Portland Middle School
(Temporary Position – Remainder of the 2025–2026 School Year)
Portland Public Schools is seeking a compassionate, student-centered Student Support Services Coordinator to join our team at Portland Middle School for the remainder of the 2025–2026 school year. This temporary position plays a vital role in supporting students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth while fostering a safe, inclusive, and positive school culture.
Position Summary
The Student Support Services Coordinator will work collaboratively with staff, families, and community partners to strengthen student support systems within Portland Middle School. The ideal candidate will have experience in counseling, restorative practices, and behavioral intervention, and will help ensure that students receive the individualized attention and resources they need to succeed.
Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred or enrolled and actively working towards Master’s degree or higher.
Valid Michigan School Counseling (NT) or K–12 School Counseling certification preferred; candidates with relevant experience in social work or student services will also be considered.
Experience working with middle school students or in a similar student support capacity.
Knowledge of behavioral interventions, restorative practices, and trauma-informed care.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, students, and families.
The desired candidate would possess the following attributes:
Experience in Middle School Counseling
Knowledge of Personal Curriculum and Michigan Merit Curriculum regulations
Experience in Special Education and Section 504 regulations
Able to use technology in an efficient manner
Excellent organizational skills
Knowledge of MTSS and PBIS to support student needs
Experience with student management system, preference: Skyward
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
This position works within the counseling department at Portland Public Schools and is directly responsible for ensuring the district meets the social and emotional needs of students within the districts MTSS system.
Provide individual and small-group support for students addressing academic, social, and emotional needs.
Lead or assist with restorative practices, mediation, and crisis response to maintain a positive learning environment.
Coordinate student support efforts within the school’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) frameworks.
Collect and analyze student data to identify trends, guide interventions, and monitor progress.
Collaborate with teachers, counselors, social workers, and administrators to develop and implement student success plans.
Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community agencies to ensure access to appropriate services.
Support staff development on trauma-informed and relationship-based practices.
Participate in building-level MTSS and crisis response teams.
Maintain accurate and confidential student records and reports.
